[RESOLVED] Temperature of CPU 99 degrees celcius, fan not responding

Hi all,

I just bought a motherboard and cooler master case, installed ubuntu 22.04 server on it.
When logging in to the terminal the welcome message shows 99 degrees celcius. Also I found out the fan is not running. The cable of the fan looks connected to the board, I didn’t touched that.

This is the output of the linux sensors command:
sensors

Adapter: PCI adapter
Composite: +58.9°C (low = -5.2°C, high = +89.8°C)
(crit = +93.8°C)

Core 1: +86.0°C (high = +100.0°C, crit = +100.0°C)
Core 2: +87.0°C (high = +100.0°C, crit = +100.0°C)
Core 3: +84.0°C (high = +100.0°C, crit = +100.0°C)

Is this normal. Or should I contact support related to warranty of the fan or so?

  • Which OS (Operating System): Ubuntu 22.04 server
  • Which Framework: [Framework Laptop 13 Mainboard (11th Gen Intel® Core™) - i7-1165G7] without laptop, including cooler master case

Thanks for helping.

Are you using the OEM kernel?

That does feel a bit toasty.

  • You are using Ubuntu Server 22.04 .3? This should have been a fresh ISO download. 22.04 without the 3 is super not ready for AMD.

  • You are on 3.03 BIOS?

  • What is your TOP or glances output? Feels like something with databases or similar may be hitting the CPU.

I did a default minimum server install of Ubuntu 22.04.03 LTS from the https://ubuntu.com/download/server image. I didn’t change anything related to the kernel.

On my framework laptop which haves a 12th generation motherboard (the one I bought with the cooler master is a 11th gen) I don’t have this issue with Ubuntu Desktop 22.04.03. On my laptop the temperature is around 34 degrees Celsius while the load is higher, and sometimes I hear the fan running. So that is why I am concerned about the 99 degrees.

Thank you for your suggestion @Matt_Hartley . Yes Ubuntu Server 22.04 .3 fresh download. Please note its an intel board, 11th gen. i7-1165G7 . So no worries about AMD.

The bios version is 03.17. It seems 3.19 is released end of 2023, but there is no option to upgrade it by Linux yet according Framework Laptop BIOS and Driver Releases (11th Gen Intel® Core™) . Anyhow, at the Enhancements / Fixes list there is nothing about the fan/temperature.

I am installing / syncing a Bitcoind node, but the CPU load is not that high.

The load at my 12th gen Framework laptop with Ubuntu 23.04.3 desktop is a lot higher, but the CPU temperature only around 34 celcius degrees. And when the temperature gets higher the fan is running. Expecting something similar with the 11th gen motherboard as well, but the fan is not running at all.

The reason I would follow the guide is in case there are kernel differences between desktop and server images. I would image there are. You don’t need nearly as much hard enablement on server hardware. Still Matt is here and he is the expert. I’ll bow out.

I have a 11th gen core i7 mainboard in a coolermaster case running 22.04 LTS (desktop) and has pretty similar temp ranges as your FW 13 12th gen laptop.

Thanks. Which guide do you mean?

Currently the bitcoin sync is finished, the load is 0 and the temperature is dropping to 32 Celsius degrees. I am still concerned about the fan was not running there was some load and temperature was 99. Has this fan not running to do with the kernel? I would expect it was from the bios and mainboard to protect overheating. So I am curious if its a fan hardware failure DOA.

This may be good to get into a ticket, as if there are concerns about the fan not running correctly, we would want eyes on this to make sure there is not any hardware issue at play. Do link to this forum thread when opening a ticket.

I already contacted support 4 days ago. Sorry I didn’t link to this topic. They asked me to check the fan connector, I did and it seems to be broken, so it will be replaced.

Appreciate the update. As this was a part that is being replaced, I’ll mark this resolved.
