For information:
I am using bare Arch Linux with kernel 6.10.4-arch2-1.
The BIOS is v3.03.
The laptop is an AMD Ryzen™ 7 7840U (up to 5.1GHz, 8-core/16-thread).
My issue is that last week I started using KDE in place of Sway. Everything concerning the hardware is fine, except when I plug the laptop to charge. On KDE, the fan starts to turn loudly. But when I am using Sway while charging, the fan does not turn on (unless I do something which draws a lot of power of course. I do not grasp where it could come from. For the details, I am using power-profiles-daemon, always in power-saver mode. I can of course provide more details if needed.
eventually start “top” in a console to check what is causing the CPU load?
KDE, when installed the first time, will index all your files for fast access through the search interface. Check if the “baloo” process is not causing that load making the fans spike.
Check the configuration → “File Search” and check how it is configured.
If file-search and content is set, then it will take longer to index and go through all file contents which can strain the CPU.
You can set to “File names only” and it will be finished way faster.
Hello Jorg, thanks for the fast answer. After checking with top it is indeed the “baloo” process that is using a lot of CPU which is why the fan is blowing. I was only checking the Plasma system monitor, which does not show baloo. Thanks for the advice !
Glad it is baloo. So - you can either wait for it to finish, or disable the content scanning which is very resource intensive
