Inquiring to the Framework team if there are plans to release more modules and for this specific model within this year.
If so, I would appreciate any information regarding what we can expect in terms of new expansion cards, input modules, or other hardware upgrades.
Also to everyone else, I’d like to hear from owners and prospective owners what they’d like to see as well.
Framework generally does not give future plans. And they usually respond to question threads, as this is primarily a user forum. In the past, they’ve directed people to their contact form for questions. That is all to say, best not to expect an answer here.
I’d like them to release an official RGB led matrix. I own two from the community member who made a few (but no longer makes them) and they are awesome. I want others to be able to enjoy them as well.
Other ideas I would like to see (and would buy):
-An e-ink module would be pretty amazing.
-O-led slim module?
-left and right gamepad modules (think Nintendo switch controller, but with the thumb sticks of a 3DS)
I see… Well it would be interesting still to see what others are wanting to happen in this space. Perhaps if nothing else, Framework will lurk and get some input, or makers may offer solutions since its easy enough for those with fabrication skills to do some things too.
Personally I’d like to see:
second display in place of keyboard (can be LCD/e-ink/LED/whatever) since I use a split ergo keyboard all the time.
Same with trackpad (my keyboard can also do mousing)
e-ink display on outside of lid to see status when closed.
more options with the GPU module (occulink/storage and GPU combo…)
I’d like to see more customization options for its configuration. Having more than one option for the built in screen would be nice, I personally would prefer a 1200p screen that was high refresh rate, my eyes aren’t as young as they use to be and scaling doesn’t work on everything. And I’m sure others would enjoy a 4k OLED screen. Also would be nice if they had a couple more dGPU options, I know there are power limitations but would be nice to get a nvidia gpu with more than 8gb of vram (probably won’t happen now thanks to ai) or something a little cheaper like a 5060 or 5050 who don’t need the 5070’s power but want Nvidia over AMD for graphics. The other thing I’d personally like are touchpad modules that are build specifically for the framework 16 so you don’t have to have spacers, would be nice to have one designed with it on the left, center and right and be able to choose those over the spacer based option if you prefered. A touch screen OLED that can do things like the streamdeck in place of the numberpad might be kinda cool if they could mange to get it to fit in that profile.
I suggest refining existing modules/components and increasing their reliability, such as making the EC/charge controller more bypass and less DC-DC converting
Ya know, I’ve seen on some other laptops (including from HP, Dell, Fujitsu, etc) various folding mechanisms that allowed you to have a full Ethernet port in a smaller size. If they could incorporate something like that into an Expansion Card that doesn’t stick out all the time… that would be nice.
As for me, my wants for future Framework 16 updates:
-Full-width single keyboard module (so that the main keyboard and the numpad aren’t separate attachments), preferably with an RGB option. Maybe as a full keyboard, this could allow some changes to the spacing of the keys? Maybe bigger Arrow Keys? Maybe dedicated Home/End/PgUp/PgDn buttons? I dunno.
-Full-width touchpad module. While I got one 3D printed, a metal one would still be nice.
-Either a smaller 1920x1200 (WUXGA) or a larger 3840x2400 (WQUXGA) screen resolution. This would allow the screen to use 100% or 200% scaling as the default. The current display (2560x1600 WQXGA) looks best at 150% scaling… but the problem with that is a lot of games and applications do not look good at this scaling. I would also be fine with a lower max refresh rate of 120 Hz. Oh, and a touchscreen would be nice.
-A GPU with higher VRAM. The RTX 5070 performs significantly better than the 7700s (in my experience), but it’s still hampered by only having 8GB VRAM. At least 16GB would be nice. Though, given the current RAM situation…. yeah.
-More color options for the screen bezel and USB-C Expansion Cards. Particularly, a med/dark blue (or even a transparent blue).
-Somehow, figure out a different motherboard arrangement to allow for two 2280 SSDs instead of the current 1x 2280 & 1x2230 setup. I’m glad at least the Framework 16 has two SSD slots (instead of one like with the FW12 and 13), but I can definitely tell that the 2230 is slower than the 2280.
