[SOLVED] FW 13 AMD 7840u fans are running so low that they cause thermal throttling during gaming?

Hi Peepz,

I have a problem. Recently while playing Hunt Showdown on my FW 13 AMD Ryzen 7840u (mostly low settings, 70% render resolution scale) with something between 60 and 80 FPS, I encounter a severe FPS drop to between 30 and 40 FPS after one or two matches with the laptop getting quite hot. I am pretty sure this is thermal throttling. Firstly, this didn’t happen until about two weeks ago. I played a lot of Hunt on it and it was fine. Secondly, when it does happen, the fans are not running at full speed, as I would expect them to be. They do at first, but then they seem to slow down at some point. So my explanation is that this reduction in fan speed causes the thermal throttling. I mean, it’s summer too, but our flat is always quite warm and now it’s maybe two degrees warmer than a few weeks ago when this wasn’t happening. Has anyone else experienced this? Is there any way or software to get the fans to run at full speed non-stop while I play? Any other suggestions?

I appreciate any help and can run diagnostic software if anyone can tell me what would be best for this case.

Thanks in advance.

Cheers.
Volin

Can you get some measurements while gaming with HWINFO?

Here you go.

I couldn’t upload the csv file to the forum, so I used wetransfer.

Also, I took the headphones off and listened to the fans while I was playing, and maybe the fans didn’t turn down this time. So maybe it’s the room temperature that makes the difference? My room is 25 degrees Celsius at the moment.

I just had a look at the file. It’s definitely not thermal throttling as your temps are very reasonable (70-80 C). Instead, I think it is something related to your power profile/charger as it’s wildly fluctuating. Assuming you are using Windows 11, what driver pack, charger, and power profile do you have set?

Thanks for looking into the file!

Interesting that you say that its not thermal throttling.

I use the original framework charger, I have set the power mode to “best performance”. I use the bios version 03.05 and AMD (adrenalin) driver version 24.1.1 (I just saw that there is a new version available, will download it and see if it makes a difference).

Do you need any other info?

Thanks for your time!

PS And yes, Win11.

In that case, I’d recommend rerunning the driver bundle and seeing if that fixes the fluctuating TDP. If it doesn’t, you could try a newer adrenalin version. Alternatively, you could install x86 tuning utility and manually changing the power targets to see if it fixes it. Also, it might be due to the charger only being 60 watts as for context, using a 100 W charger on my Ryzen 7, it’s always locked at 30 W.

Ok, I’ll try that today or tomorrow and report here. Thanks again!

Ok, reinstalling the driver bundle provided by framework and downloading the latest AMD adrenaline version hasn’t helped with my problem, the 50% FPS drop is still happening. I will try x86 utility tomorrow and if that doesn’t help, I will try to find/borrow a 100 W charger and see if that fixes the problem. Will report here.

Ok, I downloaded universal x86 tuning utility and set the preset to “extreme”.

I played a few Hunt matches and this time, no FPS drop occurred. Thank you for the advice! I logged it with HWinfo, here is the file:

Maybe could you have a look if the power draw issue is resolved from what you see in the file and also if the temperature is still ok, I don’t wanna fry my CPU. Could that happen, theoretically or would something prevent that? Just wanna be sure…

Thanks again for your time.

Just had a look. Everything looks great as the temps are in the mid 70s (which is perfectly fine) and the power draw is now more consistently at 30 W. Don’t need to worry about frying anything as modern CPUs have protection mechanisms if their temps get to high and there’s a cap on the amount of power it can draw.
