Long time Framework 13 enjoyer here. I bought a new F13 this summer. Best iteration in my book - great display (2.8K), correct speakers, fast CPU and ram. I love this journey.
However i have a very annoying glitch with the mouse cursor. When in the “I-Beam” shape in certain applications, it turns white thus marking it almost invisible for a couple of seconds.
This happens in Chrome (even the Beta release), VSCode (see Screenshot below), Libre Office Writer, Brave.
The cursor is normal in other apps: Windows interface, Notepad++, Sumatra PDF, Word, Excel, Firefox…
This glitch disappears when I plug my external display via USB-C (LG Ultrafine 27 4K). So it’s related to the internal display of the laptop - whether i use the trackpad or a mouse.
I must admit this glitch is quite annoying since I use Chrome quite a bit and like to take notes in VS Code.
Am I the only one with this issue ?
Is it software/driver induced ? Or hardware could be involved ?
OS: Windows 11 pro (insider program - beta - build 26220.7070)
Framework: F13 Ryzen AI 5 340 (Bios 3.04) and 2.8K display
Hardware: Crucial DDR5 64 Gb with SN7100 1Tb Nvme
AMD drivers: up to date (chipset v 7.06.16.044 - Oct 31)
This seems to be a recurring issue on the internet. Probably due to a bug with the AMD graphics card. The mouse cursor (I-beam) image is at fault and needs to be changed.
If the size of the cursor is increased (from 1 to 2), there is no more glitch. However, the “size 2” feels to big to my liking and there is no fractional scaling (1.25 or 1.5) available - the state of the cursors on Windows is bleak.
How to change the cursor I-beam image:
Go to Run (Windows key + r), type MAIN.CPL, hit Enter
Click on ‘Pointer option’ and uncheck “Hide Pointer While Typing”
Click on ‘Pointers’ then in the customize click on Text select
Another option is to download a brand new set of mouse cursors. I’ve found Posy’s cursor set for Windows. On high DPI display, such as the 2.8K Framework display, the original windows cursor is a bit small with a very thin black outline. The Posy’s cursors are (slightly) bigger than the original ones and designed for high DPI displays. The cursor’s outline is thick enough for my liking. I highly recommend them.
Lastly it’s crazy that Microsoft can update the office icon set every other year (why ?) but cannot design a decent mouse cursor set that match today’s displays technology. No wonder why people prefer to stick to Apple products…
