SOLVED – there’s an option in Settings that disables the touchpad when typing. Disabling that option obviously enabled the touchpad when typing ;-).

============================================

Symptoms: When playing a 3D game (DooM, Minecraft,…) I can’t get the keyboard + integrated touchpad to work simultaneously.

Expected behaviour: I would expect to be able to use WASD for movement while using the touchpad to change the camera view.

Steps to reproduce:

  1. Install a 3D game (freedoom, any gzdoom variant, the official doom/heretic/hexen, minecraft,…).
  2. Launch the game
  3. Check the camera view changes when using the touchpad
  4. Start moving using WASD
  5. While moving, use the touchpad to change the camera view

Sidenote: I do have the expected behaviour when using an external mouse, so I’m not sure why the touchpad isn’t as friendly as the mouse.

What happens when you open up something like the terminal or a text editor and start typing whilst trying to scroll around with the trackpad?

I think what you’re describing is (normally) expected behaviour. You normally don’t want to accidentally trigger the trackpad whilst typing, so it gets disabled. (I used to have horrible issues with the trackpad on a previous laptop where I’d be typing away, look away for a bit and then realise that I’d accidentally started typing in another paragraph because my palm had touched the trackpad)

On KDE (on a Lenovo rather than FW laptop since mine hasn’t arrived yet) I go to Setings > Touchpad and there’s an option there “Disable while typing” with the helpful text below saying “This can interfere with video games”

Thank you! The same behaviour was present when using the terminal.

I wasn’t aware of this extra setting (found a similar one on Gnome) and unchecked the “Disable Touchpad While Typing” option in “Settings”.

This now aligns with the behaviour from my previous laptop (from a Cupertino-based firm). I will update the initial post.

No worries. Over the years I’ve had issues with the sensitivity and duration of the trackpad being disabled, but that’s mostly been preferred over the issue of typing all over the place in reports or code.

It’s been a long time since I last used fruit-based computers and I can’t remember whether or not that was a frequent offender for that.
