Which Framework laptop (11th, 12th or 13th generation Framework laptop, Chromebook or Framework Laptop 16) are you asking for support with?
Framework Laptop 13 (13th Gen Intel® Core™)
Hi Community,
my laptop is about a year old now.
Since a few weeks the speaker sound is not working anymore. When I hover over the speaker icon on the bottom right, it just gives a generic “No speakers or headphones are plugged in”
I checked the device manager and noticed that there are 3 unrecognized devices:
Intel High Definition Audio
BT LE Sideband device
Nearby Sharing
I downloaded the latest driver pack (last week) and tried updating everything, but still all 3 three devices remain with a question mark
I also unplugged/replugged the speaker from the mainboard, just to make sure it’s not just a lose cable.
I only noticed it recently as I mostly have the laptop connected via HDMI and there the sound is working fine.
I’m also not exactly sure if “BT LE Sideband device” & “Nearby Sharing” is even related to the sound issue or if it is another issue with a feature that I’m just not using.
Does anyone have an idea/suggestion how I can fix it? Maybe Speaker needs to be replaced?
Can you share a screenshot of your device manager?
Also you could try disabling and reenabling those devices. If that doesn’t work, I recommend uninstalling the device (in Device Manager not physically). Then rerun the driver bundle and see if that works.
Time to contact Support. I think you might have a hardware issue.
One thing you could do is make sure that the audio board ribbon cable to securely plugged into the mainboard and vice versa. Just to rule out there being an issue because of the missing audio board.
Coincidentally do you have any issues with lid closures being detected?
Hi @Maurizio_Megastaine I’m just wondering if you got this sorted? And if so what did you do?
I have the same problem now - my Framework 13 (13th Gen Intel) has had working audio for 12mths and I’ve just noticed that it stopped working in the last week or two.
I don’t use audio often so I can’t pick the exact day it stopped, but since I last used it Windows 11, version 24H2 update has also installed (possibly not relevant).
I’ve tried reinstalling the driver bundle and all the things you tried in this thread, but to no avail so far.
I believe you are 100% correct on it being a Win 11 24H2 issue. I have seen this with work computers, and my wife just had this happen on this very same Framework laptop on which I’m typing within the past week or so. 24H2 was installed on the Framework laptop on 3/6/25, which would coincide with the “No audio device installed” issue I’m having now. Really don’t want to do a clean Win 11 install, but I may have to if the 2025-03 Cumulative update that is now available doesn’t fix the issue. sigh
We’d like to take a deeper look into this issue. If you have a Framework Laptop 13 with Intel Core 13th generation processor and if you are experiencing audio issues after updating to Windows 11 24H2, please provide the information below:
BIOS version
Windows 24H2 build number.
Hardware ID for the question mark/yellow bang device (right click the device->properties->Detail->Hardware ID)
The error code for the device (right click the device->properties-> general).
If there is any additional information you’d like to provide (any screenshots, any error messages, any additional steps you have tried) please let us know.
I am having a possibly similar issue. I have been using the laptop for about 1.5 years, been dualbooting Windows 11 and Ubuntu for the last year. Recently, there were some instances where the audio device would not show up but this could be fixed with a reboot. Now, even rebooting into either OS is not helping.
There are no errors in device manager. There are no audio devices in device manager. The only audio-related thing I could find in device manager is “High Definition Audio Controller” under “System Devices”. I am running Windows 11 24H2.
I may be having this issue. I just upgraded my mainboard from the 11th gen to the 13th gen Intel today and am also on Windows 11 24H2. Everything seemed to be going well after I installed the driver bundle and the bios for the 13th gen, except speakers and microphone are not detected. I’ve opened the laptop back up and the speaker cable and audio board ribbon both seem to be firmly seated. But Windows doesn’t see anything. I haven’t had a chance to test headphones or external speakers as I don’t have any handy at the moment. There are no yellow marks in device manager or error codes.
Had a bit more time to troubleshoot today. Ended up uninstalling all of the Intel Smart Sound Tech items from device manager and after rebooting I got audio back. It’s now just showing as “High Def Audio Device” where on my old mainboard I had Realtek audio. I saw another post mentioning that Realtek was only used on the first batch of Frameworks, so maybe this is fine? But, I was wondering if there is a different driver I should be looking for? Speakers are working and the mic is detected, but I wasn’t sure if I’d get as good of noise cancelling or other features if I’m using a generic driver.
Thanks for looking at this issue - I still have the problem (last time I updated anyway) and as soon as I have the motivation to upgrade (and then downgrade again) I’ll get you those details.
So I have not looked further into this as I have been busy with university exams. The issue has remained this whole time.
Today I was using my laptop and heard a strange and loud noise come from it (bizarre sort of popping/ripping lasting about half a second). I then noticed the bottom left corner of the palm rest become hot to the touch. It was not charging at the time (plugged in but the socket switched off) so I knew it could not have been the battery. I knew that the speaker was under there.
I took off the input cover, inspected the speakers, and the left speaker looks different to the right, the membrane looks all strained and warped. Pics attached. I left the speakers unplugged and am using the laptop normally right now.
