Swollen Battery <1yr in, How to address?

The extended warranty applies to higher-capacity 61Wh batteries only.

But I think, Framework’s new battery maintenance mode (where if your laptop is plugged in for a very long time, it starts charging the battery to less and less than 100%) applies to any capacity of a battery as it also applies to Laptop 16’s batteries. So to answer

Yes, they investigated this and released BIOS updates for Laptop 13 and 16 to prolong the life of all batteries when the laptop is plugged in all of the time.

Ok, that’s good that they’ve addressed the issue. I thought I was on BIOS 3.05, but I’ll double check that when I can. I’ll be keeping up with BIOS updates better from now on. Also, to their claim:

I have a 55Wh battery, is the warranty extended?

No, based on the battery chemistry on the 55Wh battery, we have not seen this issue occur.

I guess count me in as someone who has seen the issue occur on a 55Wh. Maybe the lower capacity has allowed for more time to pass before the issue presents itself, but it is definitely present.

No dice. They said even with a theoretical extra year added to the warranty for a 55Wh battery, my laptop, which was purchased in January 2023, is out of warranty. I was again directed to buy a new battery.

I guess my takeaway from this would be: I think it would be great if Framework added a better notification system for issues like this since it was discovered back in late 2024 and since I don’t browse the forums very often I missed the note. I would think something like a mailing list where you can sign up for email notifications for known issues and critical BIOS updates related to your devices (eg. I could have signed up for the Framework 13 mailing list). Then I might have been able to save a battery which goes along with their mission statement. I’ve had this laptop 2.5 years and have generated 1 lithium battery worth of ewaste so far. At this rate, this laptop is the most wasteful one I’ve had so far, since I’ve been able to keep most of my laptops in regular use for 5+ years.

I am in the same situation. I purchased my Framework 13 in November of 2023. Almost one year later I had to contact support for a replacement battery do to swelling in October of 2024. I just now ordered my third battery in November 2025 because of the exact same swelling issue. I, like other people on here, keep my system docked and charging during the day. I will be changing my BIOS battery settings once I get the new one. I am almost tempted to buy a spare to have on hand so I can keep going and not be tethered to the desk with my laptop while waiting for the battery to arrive.

I love the Framework laptop in every way but the battery situation does seem to be a problem. I was going to purchase one for my daughter to use in Veterinary school but I am now reluctant after seeing several message in the forum over this issue. But then again, my daughter would not keep her laptop on charge all the time like I do. I use mine as my daily driver hooked up to a 43” monitor.
