Taken the plunge

Well, after a few years of debating and frankly waiting for my old laptop to finally die… I have taken the plunge and ordered a Framework 13

Everything I’ve read and seen about it, tells me it’s the right direction for me to go in. So, just waiting for the DIY edition with the Ryzen 9 to arrive so I can start on this new journey.

Question for the community: How long does it take (average) from ordering in-stock items to delivery to the UK?

I must say, I see a lot of myself in your initial post; I also have a DIY 13 with the HX 370 on the way right now and purchased it for the same exact reason

It was dispatched on June 17th, reached our local delivery base on June 20th (after quite an illustrious voyage that took it to Guangzhou, Dubai, Milan, Paris and Berlin), and will be delivered tomorrow, knock on wood - FedEx tends to be reliable around here. That’s for Germany, of course.

Welcome to the community! (although I am new here myself)

Mine was ordered on 19 June, but has not yet been dispatched (I know, it can take five working days to dispatch), so I won’t be worrying until Wednesday this week. I have been looking at doing this for a long time, finally I have the means and the need. Yep, am super excited about it.

I had a pre-order, so it does not compare to a “in-stock” order.
But, once it gets into Fedex hands in Taiwan and you can track it, it takes about 5-7 days to get to the UK.

Thank you.

It shipped today (23rd June) and is due before noon on the 26th :slightly_smiling_face:

Well… It arrived with no problems. Exactly as ordered. Building it was fun and easier than I thought. Still loading everything I want on to it, but from little use I’ve had in less than 24 hours? Awesome machine.

The only snag: I got a little cocky and didn’t follow the instructions on installing the bezel and snapped it sigh Got it on now, so I have something there, but have ordered a replacement. My bad, not Frameworks.

Still, absolutely fantastic machine and idea. Loving it!

My thoughts:

The Framework 13 AMD Ryzen AI 9 HX 370 Laptop DIY Edition is just a dream to put together. I ordered everything I needed from Framework, apart from the SSD which I already had. The freedom to spec your machine, get just what you need (or want) and choose your own IO? Love it.

In terms of IO I picked 2 USB-C, 2 USB-A, 1 Display Port, and 1 Audio Jack (for those times both my other half and myself are listening to stuff from it). I have also ordered ta 1 1TB Expansion to use as a gaming drive, but that has yet to arrive.

The new keyboard is lovely to type on. The key travel is perfect and responsive. The lack of a branded Windows key was a big seller for me, as I may change my mind in the future and use Linux. And frankly, the Framework “Cog” looks nice in its place.

Setting up Windows 11 Pro went off without a hitch. I plugged the Laptop into a generic dock that fed it power and ethernet access, and so had no issues with Windows having to get online before I could get the drivers on. (No need for the “Rufus” method.)

The fingerprint scanner is very good. It occasionally fails to load the driver and not work at startup, but I can say that 29 times out of 30 it has worked, and been pretty quick.

I chose the bog standard back bezel, and in my haste to build the laptop, I snapped it. My bad, and I have ordered a replacement. The broken one is sitting on the laptop, as the magnets are holding it in place, but I can see the break, so… as I say, replacement is on the way.

Customer service was brilliant in answering the questions I had, and they were very patient as well.

So far, no issues. Kudos to Framework. Glad I could join the ride, and I look forward to the future with this machine

You really should. Windows 11 is bad enough on a Dell or HP, but on an actual cool piece of hardware? I don’t know, there’s just something viscerally off-putting about that to me.

But it’s good to hear that by and large, everything went smoothly for you. I had a very similar experience a few days prior, fortunately minus the snapped bezel. Fedora 42 with KDE Plasma 6 just runs perfectly on this thing - I mean, seriously, native fingerprint sensor support that just works without any tinkering? Is that even allowed? I can confidently say that the only bad thing about this setup software-wise is the name of the distro, but I guess it wouldn’t really be Linux without it (the heck is an Ubuntu, anyway).

Well, after I updated all the drivers, the fingerprint scanner has been running like a dream.

I didn’t know that, thank you!

(Disclaimer: I don’t want to start a distro war, just take it as it is, a simple joke)
That reminds me we had this joke in university: Ubuntu is an African word meaning “I’m not able to configure Debian”.

I actually can’t, Thats the funny part. I tried, Debian killed itself. So I went back to Fedora, specifically Bazzite. So now I do almost zero configuration. it’s delightful and I love that.
