[TRACKING] Framework13 Keyboard has intermittent keys

I’ve struggled with the intermittent ‘p’, ‘0’, ‘-’ key failure for the past few weeks. It’s worst when I open the laptop in the morning. After some use the keys function almost normally (but often produce a bounce/repeat). I opened a case with support and after sending photos and video they say “replace input cover and sorry, your laptop is out of warranty”.

I’m not thrilled in that the failure must be more localized than the whole input cover. I’ve done some troubleshooting and can’t convince myself that it’s the cable connecting to the mainboard. New mainboard is $109 + shipping + VAT/taxes. Not the end of the world but not great either.

Friendly reminder, if you experience this and are within warranty, please open a ticket for support.

I had this issue. I replaced just the keyboard, $40 (plus shipping etc). It’s a significant repair job, with 60-ish tiny screws to take out and put back, that’s why support recommends replacing the whole input cover, that’s easier/safer. Replacing the keyboard completely fixed the issue for me (and that makes sense to me, given that pressing the keys “hard” would bring them “back almost normal” for some hours, seems like a physical issue).

Also happening with me. It’s the P, 0, and backspace keys for me. If I push them really hard and wait a few seconds I can get it to trigger.

for me the p key also stopped working I have to press it 5 times and then it works again

I also has an intermittent ‘p’, ‘0’, ‘-’, “.”, “pg down” and “F12” key. I just comment here to record my experiences.

A quick update:
Now it is solved with the help of the framework support with providing the following steps:
0. Giving the keyboards a thorough check and clean and reconnect the touchpad cables

  1. Reset the BIOS
  2. Mainboard reset
and test functionality by https://keyboard.frame.work/test each step.

I just started having this same issue on my 7840U FW13 at least with keys “0”, “-”, and “p”. It’s very intermittent and like others mashing the keys gets it to work.

My guess is it’s a driver issue then. I’ve fixed that by disabling and reenabling them in device manager.

As a troubleshooting mechanism I’d try booting Linux and seeing if it happens there or Windows if you are running Linux.

Also rule out that it’s not the OS lagging by using an external keyboard.

I don’t know what it could be on Linux since I dont use Linux on a laptop though.

Quick update, the problem still occurs after 1-2 day of uses.
After contacting with the support, the problem may be the keyboard. Since out of warrantee, I’ll replace with the 2nd gen keyboard to see if the problem still occurs (magically now my p, 0, - works well, but it may not work soon.)

Just for reference, I run Linux (arch btw lol).
