Unable to boot Fedora 44 from Ventoy on external SSD (FW 13 Pro)

Hi everyone,

I’m having trouble booting Fedora 44 from Ventoy on an external SSD (WD Black SN850X in a HyperDrive enclosure) with my new Framework Laptop 13 Pro (Framework Laptop 13 Pro, X7 358H).

The external SSD is detected by the UEFI, and I can select the Ventoy entry from the boot menu. However, Fedora does not actually boot. Instead, the system gets stuck in a boot loop.

Interestingly, I get different errors:

nvme 0000:82:00.0: Unable to change power state from D3cold to D0, device inaccessible
nvme 0000:82:00.0: error -ENODEV: probe failed
ucsi_acpi USBC000:00: unknown error 256
[drm:drm_mode_config_cleanup] *ERROR* connector Unknown-1 leaked!

There were no other devices connected to the laptop during testing, including no power/charging cable. I also tried connecting the external enclosure directly, without an extension card, but that did not make any difference.

Has anyone experienced similar issues with the Framework Laptop 13 Pro? Is there a known fix?

Is a “Ventoy” the brand of external disk enclosure? If so, is that connected via USB4?

Do you have the right Ventoy version for secure boot? I know a while back I had a problem with Ventoy that I worked around by turning off secure boot in the bios (not on a Framework). I vaguely recall reinstalling ventoy on the usb stick a different way and then it would work with secure boot on.

Ventoy didn’t work on my FW13Pro either. I had to use balena etcher to flash my usb stick, then it would boot.

I’m not sure why that is though.

No, Ventoy is a tool that lets you boot iso images without flashing them onto a flash drive.

Maybe the fedora 44 live ISO—the way it boots up from ventoy—is too old to work properly on new hardware like the FW13 pro? Try booting the september 2026 arch ISO to see if that works on Ventoy.

It does not work with secure boot disabled either. But you’re right, there is an option for secure boot in Ventoy, but I enabled it and it seems to work with some ports of the regular FW 13 (AMD 7040).

No issues here… I have a the FW13 Pro with Intel Core Ultra X7 and ventoy installed on a Sandisk 128Gb stick.

I only have the final beta ISO for Fedora 44 Workstation on it at the moment but it booted up just fine, so if you’re using a release version of Fedora 44, I don’t think the age of the ISO should be a problem.

I have Ventoy version 1.1.12 installed on my drive, so it might be that you need to update yours if it is older than that. The latest available version appears to be 1.1.17, and you can update an existing ventoy drive using the GUI apps available via the download link on the ventoy homepage.

I’m using 1.1.17 and the error occurs with other distros (for example Ubuntu 26.04) as well. So neither Fedora nor Ventoy seem to be the main problem. So I guess it is the combination of that particular enclosure with the firmware of the mainboard… As I said, it works with the front ports of the FW 13 7040 Series.

Might be worth dropping a report on the Ventoy forums to see if they can help.

fwiw, I’m using Secure Boot on my FW13 Pro and my Ventoy stick is configured for Secure Boot also, on booting this device from Ventoy for the first time (I transferred my current NVME drive from my old FW13, so didn’t install from Ventoy this time around) I had the MOK enrolment page appear… so all of that appears to be working normally as well.

Good luck.
