UPDATE: Microphone quit working? **are magnets at play here?

Running Fedora 34, I know my microphone was working because I recorded a video w/ cheese when I set the laptop up…

Then I switched the cam and mic OFF with the switches… today, I turned them both on as I was joining a video call on Matrix… the video showed up, but there was no audio… so anyway, that didn’t work and I went to Cheese and sure enough no mic audio…

Rebooted, and opened settings - sound… the mic isn’t registering at all.

Any ideas? Grrrrrrrr…

@Paulie420

The switch is optical, so 1st step would be pull back the screen frame a bit and make sure that nothing is blocking the U shaped opening of the sensor.

2nd would be to check Framework guides on how to replace the module and make sure that the connectors are fully in place. Shipping and moving around the laptop can move a cable out of place.

Yea, its weird - something is causing an issue… later last night the mic was ON again and working fine; but then today its off/dead. So I have a software issue OR maybe a hardware one… guess I’ll have to dig in and diagnose - was hoping someone else experienced it too.

Hey, I think I found the issue? Can anyone confirm, or… think thru this with me?

First, a prerequisite. I use a JUUL vape device; it magnetically attaches to a USB dongle. I was using this dongle in my Frame.work, and it is CONFIRMED that magnets can initialize hibernation mode on the Frame. OK, this is fine - I found exactly where NOT to put it and that issue is solved…

My microphone was seemingly turning OFF and not working randomly. I thought man, I must have some software issue causing this - and I posted here seeing if anyone else has similar issues.

I am now REALLY thinking its the JUUL magnet. (Any magnet!) Another poster mentioned that the mic switch is optical, so thats not magnets but… I rebooted my machine and the mic works like normal, and I’ve now completely taken the JUUL away from the device and for the life of me I can’t get the issue to come back…

So, are magnets turning off my mic, too? [LOL, furthermore - I think magnets are a general no-no w/ the Frame.work.]

I’ll be much happier if this IS the issue, and its a simple fix and I can quit thinking I’m INSANE! :stuck_out_tongue:

It’s not the magnets, it is an optical switch.

But yes magnets close to the left center side of the laptop tells it the lid is closed.

Two separate things. Only Coincidence that it works now.

Check for dust and loose connections.

Yep; I’ve since… yea. I’m having intermitent NO MIC issues and… when I remove the bezel I don’t SEE anything out of the ordinary. But I just got the machine - what am I looking for?

Also, thank you… bit more info?
