USB-C Power Supply

Hi, I would like to know if you can use any type of power supply for the Framework 12? I found one on Amazon that is cheaper than the one of Framework, and i would like to know if anyone has tested an other device and have any tips to give.

Thanks!!

So you should be able to use any USB C power supply because the USB C standard requires devices to communicate how much power is delivered between them. Any power supply would work but a lower wattage supply would just charge slower (but they would be significantly cheaper).

I can’t comment on the Framework 12 yet but I’ve plugged in several random USB-C power supplies to my FW16 and not had a problem with any of them.

The thing that is cool about the framework one and the reason I included it in my preorder is that it has a ground pin which most others don’t.
If you don’t feel like you need that, I don’t think there is any reason that another one with the right wattage shouldn’t work.

Does that just make it safer? … Well, “just”, anyway. :joy_cat:

Can you give a link?

Hard to say without seeing it or at least hearing specs.

I would advise you be sure to get a USB PD power supply which offers 20v. The FWL12 should charge from less, but to reduce risk it’s best not to stray too far from what is known to work. And I would strongly advise not getting any no-name power supplies. Either literally no name or not a name that is known.

And be aware even with quality brand-name devices, compatibility issues do occur, so there is always a chance you’ll have bad luck. You want to best ensure no hassle? Get the Framework one.

I don’t know what you’ve found, but I’ve been using a Ugreen 100w charger for a MacBook pro, iPad pro, steam deck and switch with no problems: Amazon.de

I plan to use it as well for the framework 12

If you travel internationally or depending where you live you might get shocked by your laptop if the power supply is not grounded.
This happened to me a lot when travelling Asia.

Hi,

There are compatibility problems with some Anker power adapters. E.g. the 737.
But, in general, any usb-c psu “should” work.

As long as the power supply us 60 or 100W it should work without a problem. I’ve been using random Dell and Anker chargers on my Framework 13 without issue. Just don’t get a super cheap model and preferably a grounded one (because if the laptop isn’t grounded that can create a buzzy feeling when touching the laptop metal and the touchpad might not work well due to electric interference). Less a problem with the plastic case of the Framework 12, but still a good idea in general.

Well… Shit. :sob: Are there any specific reports of the 737 not working?

Just search this community.

If I ever do travel with a metal laptop and use one of those compact ungrounded USB-C chargers, can I theoretically put up with the little shocking sensations? Or is it legitimately dangerous/harmful

I have a 100W Ugreen Uno

Ah, shit; I’m an idiot. I have the 737 power bank and the 733 power bank / charger… Completely forgot the difference. Sorry for the trouble!

What I personally like about the FW charger is that the power supply has a separate cord, rather than just having prongs for the receptacle built in. I know it takes up a tiny bit more space that way, but I’ve been to some hotels and such where the outlets were obviously…subpar quality or abused, and hanging a charging brick from them resulted in hit-or-miss connections. And they often physically conflict with other devices plugged in when using a power strip or surge protector, depending on the design. I prefer a cord, rather than prongs on the body of the charger.

That said, over the years in various scenarios, I’ve used Belkin, Anker, UGreen, and Xcellon chargers, as well as Nintendo, Lenovo, and Steamdeck USB-C PD chargers with my Framework 13 and 16, and never had a problem with any of them. Maybe I’ve just been lucky.

Unless the charger is some cheap Chinese crap that isn’t isolated properly, it’s just potentially mildly uncomfortable. And the touchpad cursor can maybe jump around wildly sometimes.

Not a problem in an emergency.

I am using the following power supply x2 for the Framework Laptop 13 and Thinkpad X1 Carbon, and the power supplies have been no problem. I continue to use the power supply for Laptop 12.

67W USB-C Charger, Anker 315

For me, that, and frequently terrible outlet placement, why my carry-on has this one of these along with a stash of USB cables and my travel router. I won’t be trying to charge my laptop on the USB ports, but they’re plenty for a wireless phone charger or small power banks.

My favorite kind of charger that supports USB-C PD has this form factor: 200W USB C Desktop Charger - 6 Ports GaN Power Adapter & Fast Charging

I have the 65W version of the one I linked that I bought ages ago. It’s really nice as the power cable is not fixed and can be easily detached. It has the advantage most other users mention - a cable that extends reach and does not need any space at all to plug in. Because it supports 110 - 240 V, 50 - 60 Hz it can be used in any country. I just pack the correct power cable for the country and am good to go.

IIRC Ravpower had some kind of beef with Amazon and their products are not available anymore. The 200W version seems to be much bigger anyway. Amazon lists Baseus products that look very similar. Their power cable is not detachable though, which is a shame.

The last one or two years I mostly use this kind of travel adapter 1-World Universal 5-Port Travel GaN Charger 65W They have many different versions with different wattages available. Also there are many other brands. Most likely one company in China producing all of them anyway.

The adapter works well and can be used in any country without bringing a cable. It also does not block the power outlet as you can plug any device that you disconnect right into the adapter again (e.g. hotel room TV, mini fridge, etc). Initially I was worried about crammed power strips, but in reality I had no problem in many different hotels. Maybe I was lucky, but it seems as if room designs are getting better and very often provide easily accessible power outlets right next to the bed nowadays.

Edit: Initially posted in the wrong thread - deleted it there and moved it over here.

I like how the Australian socket is upside-down compared to the others.
It stays true to the meme.
