USB port stopped working out of the blue

Hi

One of the expansions ports on my FW Laptop 16 stopped working while I was using it. The serial adapter just vanished, screen terminated, and nothing else I stuck into the port worked.

[102041.739201] ucsi_acpi USBC000:00: unknown error 0
[102041.739222] ucsi_acpi USBC000:00: GET_CABLE_PROPERTY failed (-5)

I’ve tried a mouse, a hub, various modules - all produce this output (and there’s no function).

  • Arch Linux / 6.16.5
  • FW Laptop 16 AMD 7040 Series with AMD Radeonâ„¢ RX 7700S

Is there hope for this being a software problem or is my laptop broken now?

Try powering the machine off, unplugging it for two or more minutes, then reattaching power and booting back up. Hopefully that resets the port and you have things working again. Best of luck.

@lbkNhubert that did the trick - thank you!

do you know why that could have been?
is there some kind of eletrical surge protection that holds state?

Great to hear! I don’t know what causes it. I have had it crop up once in a rare while, and following those steps has resolved things. I assume that it is along the lines of what you note, some sort of overcurrent protection.
