Will Not Boot

Here is my system:
Laptop 13
Order Date: 5/2/2024 - can’t find what generation, not listed in any receipt but believe it was the latest generation when ordered
AMD Ryzen 5
Storage: WD 500GB
16GB RAM
OS: MX Linux Xfce

I’ve been having issues to get the laptop booted. It use to work just fine then started not booting recently. The first time this happened I booted from my USB and then made sure it would boot from my storage drive. For a while it was back to normal and now I can’t get it to boot from either my storage or USB. By the way, in case it is a monitor issue I tried external monitors (C connector and HDMI) without anything visible. I think this means the laptop is not booting and not a monitor issue. What do I need to do to get it to boot normally? Has anyone else experienced this problem?

Any observations of the LEDs that you can give us? With/without power plugged in? Try one stick of RAM at a time and see how that goes. Try without non-essential components, like expansion cards or storage if booting from a USB stick.

Any recent changes to hardware configuration? Done any work on it recently?

Good thing to try on any laptop whenever this happens is to force a cold reboot: Unplug power and the battery. Hold the power button for 30 seconds. Plug them back in and try to boot again, observe any differences in behavior. I’ve had various laptops come back to life with this one.

Had you ever got the Internal battery to drain to 0%? Or the removal of such a battery?
Had you performed a CMOS reset?

Older Framework had the issue of not waking up upon a dead CMOS battery, and it can take a full day to have it topped off again.

What do you mean “not booting”? Are you able to see the Framework logo when you turn the computer on?

Thanks. I’m not totally positive the battery went to 0% but its possible. I was successful to restart my laptop after the first time this happened but I had to use my USB to boot up the machine. Since it has happened again, the battery power did not go to 0% How do you do a CMOS reset?

To answer your question, when I say “not booting”, I mean nothing happens on the screen. I see no evidence the system is starting. I see absolutely nothing on my screen. My power button is lit and the LED in the C expansion is also lit where I have it plugged in. The color of the LED I think is white.

Okay, I unplugged my laptop then held the power button down for 30 seconds. The power went off after 10 seconds then came back on. At some point at about 30 seconds it finally restarted! I don’t understand why this works and don’t understand why this is necessary. Also, I don’t understand why this happened.

I then shut down my machine through the normal process and was able to restart it without a problem.

Having done desktop support for a few years, I’ve had many Latitudes and Thinkpads be revived by this method. I don’t know why it works either, but I see it happen more often when a device is opened up and the hardware configuration changed. My theory is that some system shuts off due to static electricity and the whole system needs a restart. I’ve heard that holding the power button drains residual power.

The CMOS battery is responsible for holding the settings for the laptop. Settings such as PCIe operating modes, time and clock. Or screen brightness, USB operating modes, etc.

If the CMOS goes to 0%, there is a chance that settings like these can be messed up. Which can cause all sorts of things.

The CMOS on my Framework 16 died once, I was re-pasting the thing, and I removed the battery because I dont want liquid metal ruining it. It failed on “CPU deassert sleep S4” (basically CPU can’t wake up). Could be because the BIOS was stuck in a invalid state.

Resetting basically clears everything and puts things in a “default/intended” state.
