The framework laptop 13 Ryzen 7 7640U firmware configuration does not support setting dates in the battery powered clock past 2099+11+30T23:59:59. This means that at +2100+0+0T::, the clock will no longer be able to be adjusted. This is likely because of the leap years in the Gregorian calendar and 19th century equipment (or just attempting to save a bit of money on logic gates)(+2100 is not a leap year in the Gregorian calender), or only storing the last two digits of the year, or planned obsolescence.
So you’re going to be using it … 74 years from now?
Unlikely.
“planned obsolescence”?
Yeaaaah, in 74 years I sure hope that computing has moved ahead enough that it’s completely and utterly obsolete, just through the advancement of technology. 74 years does not qualify for any mention or suggestion of “planned obsolescence” imho.
Also, many buying a Framework today would be lucky to even still be alive 74 years from now! One who’s only 18-years-old now, would be 96 at that point. Me, personally, I don’t think I’d be concerned if my 74-year-old Framework can no longer be set to the proper date. It will be a collector’s item.
It’s Y2K all over again!
(This is also weird it’s late November and not December with 2099-12-31T23:59:59.)
It is late december, but you seem to be mixing it up with a ISO date string which uses 1-based indexes, unlike my date string that uses 0-based indiexes.
It is true that there will be fewer people using Ryzen 7040U frameworks in 2100++T::, but that does not mean that the laptop shouldn’t stop working. There may be people who have important data stored on laptops that they boot up to try to accses, but the computer may get confused about whether it is a leap year. It is still best to not have any time bugs. This also interferes with operating system developers testing the operating systems leap year handling.
Thank you for explaining. Please use a standard, whatever your reasons are.
I won’t be around in 75 years, but could this be fixed with a BIOS update?
Probably not, real time clocks are usually asics without firmware at all.
I have kept delaying writing my date format as a standard. I need to decide weather I should publish with a standards organization.
Sure, have fun – but take seriously the advice in that XKCD comic.
Yikes, I’d be nearly double my current age … ![]()
