Zoom on Linux

Hi Folks,

I’m guessing this is likely a Zoom/Linux issue and not a Framework issue but I can’t seem to get through a zoom meeting off of the charger. Just crazy battery drain. Anyone else seeing this? Any suggestions if so? Apologies if this is the wrong place but I’ve searched around and most articles I’ve found seem to blame it on the fact that the user’s computer is underpowered and I can’t see that being the case here.

I get about 3 hours on zoom using a bluetooth headset. The only thing I’m doing is using power-profiles-daemon and calling powerprofilesctl set power-saver

I noticed this as well when I was on a call recently. When I did a 1 on 1 call it was fine. When I did a webinar style call, it was really bad with really fast battery drain. I had to plug in and even then I kept getting the the wait or kill program message.

I’m not on the framework laptop (yet) but I am running Kubuntu and I’ve noticed that Zoom is quite power-hungry, moreso than say Google Meet. With the little knowledge I have, I think Zoom software is poorly optimized for Linux and even somewhat neglected compared to Zoom for Windows.

has anyone tried using zoom on windows in a vm from the framework? I have a dedicated zoom setup from my school, but got the framework to replace it as my daily. I would test it but i’m still learning arch and setting everything up, but I do intend to report on how it works out for me once I get arch finished up.

I have to use Zoom for work daily. Used to use the flatpak, the app (at least back then) had some annoying quirks, like not playing 100% nicely with notifications.

I switched to browser-only a few months ago. The Zoom redirector extension is golden!

Everything works on the browser (Firefox), including screenshare, under Fedora 34 and Wayland anyway.

@dimitris i saw a few people reporting some issues with the flatpak as well, definitely gonna give the browser version a shot! with that extension, i can probably see how the framework lasts on monday, (multiple zoom meetings and several uses of my laptop for classes).
