Batch 8 Guild

A DIY version UK supporter on Batch 8 here.

Went for the i7-1165G7 variant just because i5 Batch 8 has already been sold out by the time I placed my order. Bought 2x16GB memory from Framework, as I don’t see that much a price difference compared to other marketplaces so might as well support the company. Though I did purchase SSD somewhere else since they only have few choices available.
Got the following expansions:
2x USB-A
2x USB-C
1x HDMI
Also got the power adapter, you can always have another spare one :stuck_out_tongue:

Regarding the potential shipping dates, I think andyk2 illustrated it pretty well.
One thing I might add is that it’s Lunar New Year next week, thus I don’t expect Framework to start shipping batches next week since 31/1-4/2 are bank holidays in Taiwan.

Good point, forgot about that. Any hope of a very early February shipping start then would rely on using an EU distributor and the devices being in transit to the EU now then I guess… I guess that’s unlikely! Oh the pain of waiting!

UK Supporter checking in.
i5 (i7 nowhere near worth the added cost, would have preferred Ryzen of course), 3 x USB-C, 1 x USB-A.
PSU
Will source RAM and Drive from scan.co.uk
Not sure if Win11 + WSL or Fedora35 yet
Will source a matte screen protector too. Now, we wait…

There are reports of some screen protectors damaging the framework’s display when removed. I would recommend you search these forums and read up on the reports before you apply a screen protector

Thanks for the heads up!

UK (and EU, presumably) batch 8 people: it’s not too late to snag a SK Hynix Gold P31 SSD from the USA. I got one from eBay relatively easily and it arrived yesterday, just waiting for a Framework laptop to be installed into. It’s hopefully a nice SSD for power and heat reasons and it’s not really available in the UK. It did take a couple of weeks for shipping, though. But as we’re all waiting for our laptops anyway…

SK Hynix Gold P31 is also currently available on UK amazon via the US amazon import scheme. Mine arrived today from US amazon. £75 for 500GB

Servus, just found this thread.
I’m patiently waiting for the DIY edition i5 with 2x 8GB RAM and the SN850 500GB.
I’m planning on using PopOS (really happy about the guide they posted recently.)
I’m excited about the future of this machine and what will be possible in the years to come.

I’m starting to get fidgety now. I have my SSD. My RAM arrives today. I have a text file full of notes about how to install Arch how I want and with all the workarounds for potential problems listed. Ready to go!

Yep the wait is increasingly painful now! My SSD and RAM are waiting next to my printer and a blank drive ready to make my Windows 11 install media closer to the time to minimise day 1 update needs!

Stumbled across this while searching for shipping updates! UK member of the Batch 8 Guild. Seems my set-up has been mostly covered by others throughout the thread:

From Framework:
Core i5 - I’ll consider an upgrade to either team’s latest in due course.
16GB RAM as supplied
Power Adaptor - I don’t have a USB-C charger yet!
Expansion Micro-SD
2x Expansion USB-A
2x Expansion USB-C

Additionally:
1TB Sabrent Rocket 4.0 NVMe SSD
Arch Linux running KDE Plasma
Windows 10 Enterprise - my parents and I have a 10-seat key we got in 2016, so I can guilt-free use my old laptop’s slot.
A bunch of stickers & stuff to decorate the back of the screen with

Once I’m all set up, I’ll take a deeper dive into the expansion cards, maybe starting with some microcontrollers, mag charging and Ethernet!

Hi everyone, is there any topic/blog where start of batch shipping is announced? Are we still on track for Feb shipment of Batch 8?

There is this post which suggests that emails might be going out starting this week or soon after:

Given the process that @nrp outlined in his post, February looks to me like it’s going to be a close call… Given that we (or at least I) haven’t received a notification that fulfilment is ramping up, shipping won’t start before the end of next week. That only leaves one more week for the actual shipping to happen.
Nevertheless, I ordered this in December. So one or two more weeks of waiting won’t do any harm… besides to my impatience maybe.

Any news on how Batch 8 is coming along? Looking forward to tracking it down to the UK.

I am also wondering what shipping in February is supposed to mean (shipping from within EU or shipping from TW?) and if they are shipping by ship or air. I will leave the country for at least two months beginning of March and I had hoped to take the laptop with me. No heart broken if it does not work, but still.

Yeah, some clarity on that would be really appreciated.

If they’re shipping non-express direct from Taiwan it could take an eternity to get to Europe….weeks upon weeks upon weeks usually!

im not sure they can bulk ship by air because of the batteries, the aviation industry gets very nervous about lion batteries in bulk, somewhat understandably.
