Default boot device missing | boot failed (not DIY, restart fixes it)

Every so often I get this error message, randomly, while the laptop is sitting docked. Rebooting fixes the issue. It’s basically crashing. I do not have a DIY edition and I have been using this laptop for a while now without issue.

Framework 12th Gen (not DIY)
12th Gen Intel(R) Core™ i5-1240P 1.70 GHz
Windows 11

I am not really sure what else of relevance there is to share to please help me help myself in terms of providing additional information to debug the issue. I have lost work a few times now as a result of this.

Sounds like your drive is accidentally coming unplugged. Is there ever any movement or tapping on the case when it happens? I suspect that the drive wasn’t installed properly from the factory.

You can try removing and re-inserting it: Storage Replacement Guide - Framework Guides

Interesting take, I didn’t consider that. I’ve had it open before and haven’t noticed any such issue but will take another look. I don’t believe there is a correlation to movement, it sits docked 90% of the tim, but now that you’ve brought this up I’ll keep it in mind! Thanks for the tip!

Check that the SSD is fully seated. If there are gold contacts visible at the socket, loosen the screw, push it in and reinstall the screw.

Looks fine to me…
