Expansion slot woes

Hey all, typing this out to see if anyone’s come across problems swapping their expansion slot before and if so, knows a fix.

Last week I ordered an empty expansion bay for my FW16. I have the 1st gen 7700S in there, and I found I didn’t make use of it enough to justify the bulk, so I wanted to have a slimmer chassis that fit into my backpack better. I also bought a 2nd gen webcam, 2nd gen top cover, and 240w adapter, but I don’t think any of those have anything to do with the issue I’ve come across.

I put the empty shell in this morning, and everything seemed to work OK for the first half hour, but then my laptop locked up, hard. Ctrl-alt-delete wasn’t working, the mouse wasn’t moving, screen was frozen, even the clock on the lower right hand corner of the screen (Windows 11) stopped ticking. I hard-reset the laptop and when I coaxed it into booting back up, the iGPU was running on Microsoft Basic Display Adapter drivers. Then, a few seconds later, it locked up again.

I suspected it was a driver thing, so I coaxed the laptop again into safemode, ran DDU, then reinstalled the framework drivers from this January. Same thing: worked for a half hour or so, then locked up hard.

Eventually I gave up and slotted the 7700S back in, which seems to have made the system stable again… except now it won’t turn off. I hit the Win11 shutdown button over ten minutes ago as of typing this, and the screen’s off, the keyboard is off, but the fans are still spinning and the power button light is still on.

What do I need to do to get this thing back into a working state???

By “empty shell” what part are you referring to exactly, because if it is the shell without the heatsink and fans…

No, it is not overheating. I’m referring to the expansion bay shell. I did confirm that I connected the interposer properly and the fans were spinning.

When you ran ddu, was it with the dgpu still slotted? It might be worth doing so to remove the drivers when the laptop still knows it has the 7700.

Did you get the interposer that goes with the expansion shell, or are you trying to use the 7700 interposer? If the latter then that is probably your problem.
