Fairly New Framework 16 Screen Won't Turn On

I’ve been having issues non-stop since I bought this laptop and am so close to asking for a refund because it is becoming unreliable and I need to use this for work and school.

Essentially, a couple days after I bought this laptop, the screen would not turn on after it had been shut for a while. Which I found weird. I turned it off and on a bunch of times and it stayed off. I plugged an external monitor and it displayed something. It’s what im doing now to type this post.

After asking gemini and looking through posts on here and reddit, I did some of the stuff people recommended to others in a somewhat similar situation. I re-seated the RAM. That worked one time this last month. I tried re-seating the GPU, that worked one time. I checked the connections for the monitor and the motherboard, all was good there and re-plugging and unplugging there did nothing. Sometimes, miraculously the laptop’s screen will work for no reason. After that happens, it works well for a while. But if the laptop is left untouched for hours and I try to use it again, boom, laptop screen stops working again.

I’ve updated and installed all drivers from framework, for the gpu, and tested this out both in feodra and windows. Turning off fastboot, updating the bios to the latest version, EVERYTHING!!!

I’m at a loss since I spent over 2k on a laptop that is not working. For that money I want it to just work, but it hasn’t. I had wanted this laptop for years and read about issues, so I was ready to tackle them and learn along the process. But this is just getting ridiculous when it won’t work from the get go. I’m at a loss right now.

Hi,

It sounds to me that you have faulty device hardware. You say you have tried windows and linux, with the same problems. That is why i suspect a hardware problem. Otherwise far more people would be complaining. I have a FW16 AMD 7840HS, and have not seen suspend problems. Another reason i think it is hardware fault is because the mainboard is coming out of suspend ok because an external screen works. It is just the laptop screen that fails to return after suspend and that happens on both windows and linux. If it only had the problem on say linux, it would more likely be a driver bug, but the problem being on both makes it more likely a hardware fault.

It is mostly other users like you on this forum. You might want to fill in the support form on their web site and get official FW support.

The screen doesn’t turn on from the moment I boot it. I turned off quiet boot and quick boot, so in essence, I should see commands executing before the framework logo appears, but neither do. Not even the backlight on the monitor turns on. I have the rx7700s and the AI300

This does sound like a hardware issue. Framework support is the best avenue here. If you are within the return window, it is ok to just initiate a return for the product and then purchase another one. Just trying to think of other options to get it resolved if you want to continue to give the Framework its chance to work for you. It really is a great machine when it works right. The display issues described are not normal.

This one could have a bad connector, cable with a pinched pin not aligning right, maybe something in the display itself just is going wonky.
