For MB purchasers: what case are you getting?

Ya, can’t forget about the stand-off height that Framework didn’t include in their mechanical drawings they published to their Git… I thought Framework was leaving cushion in their 92mm spec for cooler height. But seems to be spot on from this and what FW4TeePee had been sharing.

Always thought manufacturer should be calling it “cavity height”, as that’s what it is. But I guess everyone calls it “cooler height”?

How do you like it so far and how does mainboard fit into it with the CPU fan? Do you have any images you can share?

I still don’t have my mainboard. Im not sure why it hasn’t shipped yet as they charged me for it quite a while ago now

Coming in a bit late here - did you go for the Terra, and if so, did you like it? I’m strongly considering one.

The case I pulled out of the pile has a floppy drive and dvd drive in it still. It used to house my old x99 build.

For anyone that doesn’t already know about this… This pretty phenomenal collaborative work exists for ideas :

Not sure if you have to have a Google Docs account to see it. I have one and didn’t need any special credentials to open it.

Was still deliberating; you should see me when buying socks LOL! But, my Mainboard has shipped. Said to arrive Monday [ edit: but arrived today, Saturday! ] So I NEED to make a decision!

So, decided, almost. I’m going to go with the SSUPD Meshroom D OR Thermaltake Core V1. Probably in White. Probably will buy the 25mm expander kit if I get the Meshroom for a reason I won’t go into for brevity.

EDIT: I ended up buying the SSUPD Meshroom S V2 instead of the D for the S’s vertical or flat orientations … And then I cancelled that order because I realized only after buying it I was paying for a PCIe 5.0 riser cable I didn’t need, and if you buy the case and cable alone it is $99 but if you buy the two bundled it is $125… what?! ( maybe it came with the brackets too?)

So as Amazon didn’t have stock of what I wanted I completely changed direction and bought the cheaper Thermaltake Core V1. :joy:  for the reasons:

  • Cool cube case. My old daily driver is in a classic awesome CaseLabs Bullet BH7 cube
  • I dig the big 200mm front fan this small cube is supplied with, tho only 3 pin.
  • Natively supports 2x SATA drives and I imagine I can find a way to wedge a third in there for a parity drive; but I won’t “have to” if I can’t as I have a 220TB in another server for backups
  • Supports full ATX PSU (the one I’m putting in there only needs 140mm so an easy fit)
open for partial list of what I was considering in ascending liter order:
  • Do I want to use the spare 8-port SATA card I have doing nothing
  • If so do I wanna load the case with 1, 2, 3 or up to 8 SATAs HDDs?
  • Or do I want no SATAs in it… ? … I do have a MediaServer + NAS I recently built with 220.10 TB of storage in it  so it’s not like I need drives to house LLMs and training data in this Framework system, lol

I’ve done a lot of work finding cases and using the AIs to mine the interwebz to create spreadsheets collecting the case specs I’m interested in. Then consolidating them. So I’ll share a summary of just some names here. Wish this forum software supports tables but preformatted seems to work.

For my use case, I require a case that support an ATX PSU, has adequate cooler height, and further down the list below can fit more and more 3.5" SATA drives in the case; where they would be mounted via my custom mounting in place of where the GPU would mount, most typically speaking.

My Top ideas if I want no, or only 1 maybe 2 SATA inside the case by order of Liter size. I have many more columns but omitting for brevity, and to fit in the limited fixed width of a post (hope this works in the mobile view… I’ll check that later.).

Case Model Dimensions (mm)	Dimensions (inch) Volume (L)
                  (H x W x D) (H x W x D)
SGPC K66 Lite 244×160×215 9.6×6.3×8.46 8.4 (SFX not ATX PSU)
Shiny Snake L300	188×135×356 7.4×5.3×14.0 8.5 (is cooler height ok?)
SilverStone SG15	(N/A) (N/A) 11.5
SGPC K77 Lite 290×160×250 11.4×6.3×9.84 11.6

SilverStone SG16	232×200×280 9.13×7.87×11.02 13.00

My Top ideas if I DO want SATAs inside the case also in liter ascending order.
Usually requiring custom mount or bracket in place of the GPU space that’ll be unutilized.

My motherboard shipped, so I decided to pull the trigger on a Fractal Terra. I wanted an ITX case that was sandwich style because I am probably going to drop an Intel Arc Pro B50 in and don’t want to mess with a reference design while adapting the X16 length card to the X4 slot. Once all the parts arrive sometime next week we’ll see how it goes.

EDIT:

Another part of the reason was that Newegg had a sale on the silver Terra cases. It felt right, you know?

Hey,

Just ordered my MB yesterday and also went for the terra, black one. Super excited to get my hands on this device

Anyone here put the mainboard in a 2U case? That was my original plan, but I think it will be too thick to work.

I know the standoff in my 2U case are way shorter than on traditional case, so I am not even sure if I will be able to screw it in. Otherwise I think I will try to just have 80mm screamer fans directed to the side, a 12cm on top of the heatsink will definitely not fit.

Well if you have fans blowing across, some arts and crafts ducting might be enough to keep it cool. (Tape and card board)

I think Jeff’s cluster were in 2U shelf? He may even have used this part.

Just check the clearance of the 2nd SSD spreader which protrudes below the board. If you don’t plan to use a 2nd SSD the spreader can be removed.

Yes that was the plan. The case I have is a bit large, so the fan will be a bit too far I think. I will diy something with another 80mm fan with a duct for the cooler

Yeah I saw it, I think it work because of the hole at the bottom, and the fact that there is no case on top too. Oh well it should arrive soon and we will see

Anyone used a riser on the PCIe slot? I am looking for a powered one, just to be safe. I have an x8 card to put there, I don’t want to either cut the board or the card just yet.

I just put in my order. I’m gutting my current system in a NZXT H1 (extra flammable edition) to put into a Jonsbo V12, so the FW MB will likely go into the H1. I’m curious to see if using a powered PCIe 4x to 16x to 16x riser for a GPU is reasonable or not.

Interested if you get a reply about the riser!

I just got a black one of these! Excited to see how it looks next to my TV. :smiling_face_with_sunglasses:

I have a Terra (the green one) holding my current gaming rig, and I’m curious if the Framework MB will fit.

The Terra has an adjustable “spine” running down the centre line of the case: it’s meant to have a GPU on the left hand side and the mobo on the right. You can move the spine back and forth to accommodate either a thicker GPU and a smaller CPU cooler, or a taller CPU cooler and a thinner GPU. But according to Terra’s manual, it looks like the maximum height of the CPU cooler might be limited to 77mm, while the Framework MB apparently needs 92mm (see here, under Compatibility).

So I hope this build works for you, but let us know!:crossed_fingers:

I built in a Cooj MQ4 with a stated CPU cooler max of 70mm so don’t be too put off by these numbers. This drawing provides some measurements helpful in making early decisions

I had to go without the fan shroud and increase the length of standoffs to accomodate the bottom SSD heat spreader. I only have about 3mm from the APU fan to the panel but that’s enough

Nice! I’ll be curious to see if the the board will fit in my Fractal Design Terra. I’ve been assuming not, so ordered a Mood. If it fits both, I guess I’ll keep which one looks the best.
