Framework 13 AMD Ryzen AI 300 Series

Hi all. I got a Framework 13 about 2 months ago and put Fedora 42 on it. I’m decently technical, but this is my first foray into Linux so I’m running a bit blind trying to troubleshoot this issue.

Very intermittently, usually after using the laptop for at least 30 minutes, the laptop will suddenly go black and go to sleep. It seems like it’s entering a sleep mode anyway. Any bluetooth peripherals will be disconnected, the screen will go black, and the power light around the fingerprint scanner will start to fade in and out. Once I press the power button or another key, the laptop will wake back up to the password screen where I can use my fingerprint and pick back up with what I was doing. Typically once it happens once, it will happen a few times in a row over the next 10 mins or so.

I am typically using the laptop on battery, with no external monitors or anything connected. At most, I will have bluetooth headphones connected, but the laptop is otherwise running as a standard laptop on battery.

With my unfamiliarity with Linux, i’m having trouble figuring out how to best troubleshoot the issue. Nothing jumps out in System Monitor, but i’m a bit blind beyond that. Does anyone have any tips on things I can look for when it happens again to help me move towards a root cause?

Thanks in advance!

When on battery, after a period of inactivity (user not pressing keys) it will go to sleep.

In the power settings, you can adjust the idle times.

It is also varied based on the power profile, performance, balanced or power save.

Yea, this issue though the laptop is actively being used, like mid-typing it’s gone to sleep.

What is your setting for pressing the power button in the OS settings? Is it to go to sleep, or something else? If it is go to sleep, then does this behaviour change, if you change it to do nothing or to bring up the power menu?

My first suspect would be a faulty button randomly telling the OS to sleep. But this could be a wrong guess.

Are you using only Bluetooth input devices?

Can you share the journal from a boot afflicted with this issue? You can share it to a GitHub gist.

journalctl -b0

Are you using a standing desk, or working near any magnets or large amounts of metal? The Framework lid close sensor is magnet based, and pretty damn sensitive. So much so that even placing a framework on top of another framework will put it to sleep.

This can be an issue if you’re wearing, for example, a steel watch band with a magnetic closure. I’ve experienced this on a bunch of different laptops (Apple, Lenovo, Framework) because of my steel/magnetic Apple Watch band.

Hi @Andrew_Davis2 If you still experience trouble after these suggestions, please send our support a message and we’ll look into it for you.

The magnet theory is interesting! I do wear a watch but while it doesn’t have a magnetic band, it does have small magnets on the watch head. I’d hope that isn’t enough to trigger the lid close sensor, but i’ll pay attention to this during my use today.

I’ll grab the requested logs when I can repro it again. I have also reached out to support to chase down a potential temperature/fan issue that could be related.

It might be, Alternatively, since you mentioned bluetooth headphones, a lot of headphones and their charging cases have magnets in them. If you place them near the left side of the laptop, that could also put the laptop into standby.
