I think there are several problems in getting a better GPU.
- 180W power brick is to weak even for the RX7700S. Have to wait for the 240W.
- AMD has laptop GPU´s only on paper, the FW16 is one of really, really few. Which is a
miracle on it´s own. Would be nice to see the RX7900M dialled down to 130W…for
obvious reasons (or something in between that does not exist for now, like a RX77/800M
with like 56 CU´s). That would be more appropriate for the price of the FW16 which is not
terrible, but not great either. - NVIDIA wont lift a finger for such a small company.
- Thermal budget of the existing cooling solution for the dGPU
- Framework is a tiny company in comparison to other manufacturers.
All in all I think even this is a great achievement by Framework. If a bit lacklustre on the dGPU performance side. But lets see what the future brings. There are new Intel Core Ultra CPU´s with good efficiency and some interesting features, and maybe the new Battlemage GPU´s and dGPU´s on the way, or Arc A770m with more DRAM. And with Frameworks history with Intel I wouldn´t be surprised if something like this happens. Right now it looks lmore like daydreaming, but Framework was also only a dream three years ago. And now there is a full blown 16 inch laptop in existence.
