FW 12, Initial Thoughts

You can get a via-screens matte or paper screen protector to reduce the glare. I personally went paper wich may not be as glare effective but should perform better for my drawing

Yeah, there is. The funny thing is that I didn’t notice it before I noticed it in the video. After that, I do notice it when I look for it. But as a very amateur ā€œdrawer,ā€ I don’t really notice it when I’m just drawing and not thinking about it.

Yeah, I probably should have. The HP has basically none at all. The display is far shorter than either the FW 13 or 12 because it is only an 11 inch display, and it is 16:9 ratio, so it is a lot shorter. The display is also a lot lighter than the other two. The housing is plastic, unlike the aluminum one on the FW 13, and the display itself is plastic, not glass like the FW 12. So it just weighs almost nothing and is only like 6" tall. It doesn’t wobble at all.

Would be interesting to see how the textured keycaps turn out over time (wear resistant).

Are you referring to what’s seen in the video, or are you talking about your own personal experience with the machine? Because if you look to the left of where he’s drawing, you can see that brush stabilization is cranked. That would add a considerable amount of lag.

I find that there is always a ā€œhuman noticeableā€ amount of input lag regardless of what drawing tablet you’re using. It only becomes a problem when it’s so laggy that it messes with your ability to draw quickly and accurately. I can’t say that it’s necessarily the stabilization that’s causing it, but I’m convinced it is.

Yeah, referring to the video.

Here are some pics with the ViaScreens Paperlike screen protector.

Here is direct sun, over my shoulder.

Here I stepped into the shade.

It’s most likely all the stabilization then. MPP and USI pens aren’t known for being more laggy than anything else, as far as I know.

Looks like a very solid first go with the FL12. Appreciate the review. Missing TB4 is kinda a missed opportunity (for additional eGPU use cases, IMO). Now, I just need some drop test videos to see how rugged this is to justify the cost. (Is anyone up for it? Where’s Jerry?)

I forgot I had stabilization turned up for testing. It was set at 21 out of 100, but weirdly, that is about 80% on the slider. At least in that program, the input lag isn’t noticeably different when drawing relatively slowly (the speed I was drawing in the video) whether the stabilization is off or maxed. If I move the pen across the screen quickly, the input lag does go up the higher the stabilization is set. I wonder if part of it is the program. Maybe I’ll do a quick test on another program or two.

I used to use CSP a ton haha. You’ll notice it, especially if you try and draw or write quickly, it’s like that in every art program.

You should give Krita a try! It’s free and awesome! I did a line test on my Huion Kamvas 16 in Krita in an attempt to compare the line quality to the 12 with what we had then.

The other thing I’ve been wondering with the FL12 is whether this ā€˜platform’ can slowly mature into an outdoor unit with 800nit+ display, splash/spill-resistant keyboard and expansion card ports (with port covers).

Thanks for the suggestion. Once I sort of ā€œmove inā€ to a FW 12 as my daily use computer, I plan to run Linux. Krita was one of the programs that I ran across in my search for what’s available on Linux. CSP isn’t available on Linux, as far as I’m aware.

Sure thing!

I’ve seen CSP pre packed as a snap, but it’s not officially on Linux. :\

One thing I just discovered that I think should be talked about more is that when the lid is closed on the FW 12 the power button does not respond. I think this is a great way to limit the amount of accidental power button pushing. Very nice!

Actually, yeah; I was always worried about pushing the power button on my Surface Book 2 when handling it, since you need a firm grip on such a heavy device!

I like my framework 12 a lot, I use it pair with MNT Pocket Reform. Hope Framework 12 part would hit framework market soon I like to change top lid to lavender that match my purple Pocket reform.

I love the MNT Pocket Reform as well! The FW 12 in paring with it is a great little combo!

I guess JerryRigEverything likes it and wants to use it too much to try breaking it on video :L I would be intrigued too though

I considered doing some…rough handling tests. I might wait until parts are available.
