2 weeks old FW 13 died under my fingers while working.
I admit that battery was low but it was way above 10%. I’ve never managed to boot back ever since. After pressing the power button for more than a minute and plugging the charger (top right card slot) the led shows orange for 10-15 mins then it goes dark. Power on reaches (sometimes) the ferdora grub menu, sometimes even a bit further but it then dies. I can enter the BIOS but it dies too. Tried disconnect/reconnect battery and BIOS reset to no avail. I’m using my own charger which worked up until now and still works for my other laptop. The usb cable has built-in power-meter that shows steady consumption of 4 to 6W and the bottom gets warm(ish) in the area of the CPU while plugged in but it seem the battery never gets charged nor shows green light.
I’ve contacted the support but they don’t seem particularly responsive. So I’m reaching here for some advise.
Spending 3K+ on hardware that lasts little over 2 weeks is ….. let’s leave it at “bad” for now.
Sorry to hear about it shutting down. The battery was critically low and as a protection the device shut itself down. Unfortunately the battery needs to get back to a minimum charge level to get back to a working state again.
Leave your charger plugged into it for a while in hopes of trickle charging the battery up a little more. Ideally support will get back to you with the best course of action. Any device under 15% could shutdown unexpectedly as not all % read outs are the same.
Check and make sure a Power Delivery PD charger is being used too, even my little 30w one that came with my Pixel years ago is great at topping up the battery when I can’t find my primary one.
I was leaving the unit with charger plugged in for hours. Provided I see consumption no higher than 6W (more often 4W) when on charger and the warmth I can feel on the back of the unit I can speculate (not an electrics engineer here) that none of those 4-6W reach the battery.
On request from the support I’ve performed full drain procedure. Leaving the unit with battery disconnected and nvme and ram removed + BIOS reset. Still not working.
Don’t get me wrong. I did. I’m using my dell xps 15 (9500) usb-c charger. After all whatever is good for dell should be good enough for framework too, right ? The powermeter cable was used with different charger just for troubleshooting. And perhaps it was not clear from my initial post but the unit was charged few times with both before w/o any problems. I have no framework charger and why should I ? I bought this laptop for my daily driver. If it will be reliable only with some specific combination of cable/charger it’s not worth it.
