FW12 Batch 0 Guild

Aw man, That was quick. I hope it gets resolved easily!

Fingers crossed. There do not appear to be any guides published, so trying to reset the board using battery disconnect. It’s a longshot that it will make a difference, but easy enough to try.

Update - no dice.

Sounds like it would be something wrong with the motherboard, or maybe the connection isn’t stable between the board and the fan. Try reseating the fan cable?

Yeah, I should have mentioned that I disconnected the fan, the pins looked ok, then I reconnected it. The fan was working, but now on boot I get a screen that it is not present, I can skip that to boot the machine but will only do that if I can get my CachyOS setup running on it, as I have manual fan control set up there. Right now it kernel panics, so I have booted it back on my 13" and will see about installing a standard kernel in addition to the CachyOS one.

Update - installed vitals and fw-fanctrl. The fan does work and is running, but at boot time it is being flagged as not present. Will update with ultimate resolution once I get there.

Now working on figuring out why CachyOS is kernel panicking on that machine - that’s likely something that not the hardware’s fault…

Update 2 - I can get the fan to run by installing fw-fanctrl. Otherwise it does not run. Also, the captive screw on the middle bottom right fell out, but I was able to place it back in. I already installed a viascreens paperlike screen cover on the machine, so I would prefer not to swap the entire machine. I have very good luck with my 13" machines and my 16" machine, so far not so much with this one. Hopefully nothing else goes sideways on it.

It will be interesting to see how long it takes for each colour of a batch to ship out.

Yeah, i hope the other colors follow soon. I choose Bubblegum and I’m not really patient.

It’s July! Where is my framework ?!?

Super excited for my framework! It’s coming in tomorrow when I’m at work. I’ve been working as a student tech for my school for 3 years now, and I’m excited to show it off to my boss. I’m a little sad it says for Linux Mint, the table mode is not supported or at least not yet, so not sure what OS I will use. Think just mint for now, but will look for others because I want to use table mode. also interested to see battery life for my workload and using Linux, I’m hoping I will be able to get a bit more then the 5 hour battery life I’m hearing from reviews.

Why did you need to install 25.04 v.s. the latest LTS? I was looking at Ubuntu as my OS, but rather install LTS instead of one that only has a short support span.

LTS is most suitable for managed business devices, where you have to be save all applications run and can test before you switch to a newer version. The downside is that the software is rather old.
If you want to have rather current software versions, meaning new functions etc., you mostly don’t want to use lts.

Personally I bought the FW12 to do my personal finances on Linux without having to double boot and to have the bonus of being able to hardware switch turn off the microphone and camera. I’m now dual booting my current laptop and it’s just a hassle. For some reason it triggers Bitlocker on Windows every time when I boot to Windows after running Linux. Plus I would like to reclaim the space for more games.

I know it’s a pretty boring use case, but I just want a stable OS that I don’t have to upgrade often. It was also a good way for me to get acquainted with Framework devices. Been eyeing them for a while longer.

So I’m curious if he really HAD to go with the newer version because of something not working right or if it was a personal choice.

They recommend 25 if you want the touchscreen functionality to properly work. Not the end of the world for me so far.

Ah okay. For me that’s not important at all so I guess I’ll be fine with the LTS. Thanks for the quick response!

I wonder if flashing your bios again would help. To me it seems possible that your EC is corrupted. Maybe ask Framework in your support ticket for the bios firmware package so you can try that.

To me if the EC is able to respond to your fan requests then it is functional. Have you tried using fanctrl to enable auto fan control again just to see if it is functional?

I assume that the fanctrl you are using is based on the framework_tool that Framework has out. I would try that. It might point to the problem or even fix it. Maybe something happened on first boot and it disabled the auto fan? I’m spitballing here, but hopefully you see what I mean.

Possibly. Right now they are sending another fan and heat sink kit. If that doesn’t resolve things then the bios flash might be worth a try. The fan was working, and intermittently doesn’t flag as missing on boot, which feels like something with the hardware. Whether that is in the fan or the main board remains to be seen. At least it works with fw-fanctrl, so the machine can be used while working through troubleshooting.

Just got my 12 as well. Unfortunately for me the display does not seem to be coming on no matter how long I wait. I’ve checked the cables to the display and everything seems to be seated properly. I opened a support request and am waiting for a reply.

I tried removing the battery and holding the power button down for 15-30 seconds. That didn’t see to do anything.

When I power on, the caps lock light always comes on.

Really like the 12 so far and just hoping I can get it working.

Ah, sorry to hear that. Good luck, hopefully you get it resolved soon. Sending positive vibes your way…

Received and ā€œassembledā€ my FW12 (there’s even less DIY than with the FW13-- it’s really simply that they ship it with the input cover off so that you can easily install your own storage and memory)

Love it. Can echo what most others have noticed; the screen is nice and bright but the colors are a little off, but nothing out of line for a budget / secondary device. My trackpad is a little off center and I’ll probably pop it off to try to address that in a little while.

Outputs to a 7680x2160 monitor at 120hz with no problems. One nice edge over the FW13: On the 13, closing the lid seriously affects cooling, which can be a headache when you’re using it with an external monitor. I think the rear vent does the heavy lifting on the 12, so it’s less of an issue. (We’ll see if further use bears this out. ) Runs a little warm but nothing crazy. Keyboard kind of a disappointing step down in quality from the absolutely excellent FW13, but still pretty good. Most budget manufacturers totally phone in their keyboards but it’s apparent that Framework was thinking about the typing experience while also keeping the budget in mind.
