Issues Upgrading to Windows 11 on Framework 16

Hey everyone!

I want to upgrade my laptop to Windows 11 and the updater in the windows settings says my PC doesn’t currently meet the requirements to do so. What do I have to do to upgrade?

Thanks in Advance!

Did you run the pc tester tool? Idk name ofnit but a software that checks your hardware to see if it meets requirements for windows 11.

Download Pc Health App from here:

If it says your laptop passes the requirements then you gota download windows 11 iso or make a usb bootable by using media creator tool and then use that to upgrade. But keep in mind it needs a windows 11 key since idk if you still can use windows 10 key to upgrade.

Hi there, thanks for the quick answer. I ran it and it said it doesnt support it because I dont have TPM 2.0: “TPM 2.0 must be supported and enabled on this PC. TPM: TPM not detected“

I then went here ( Enable TPM 2.0 on your PC - Microsoft Support ) to enable TPM 2.0 in the BIOS, which I did (it said TPM used was 2.0; set it to enable). After restarting the Tool still says I don’t have TPM 2.0 enabled… Any ideas?

Thanks

What do you get if you right click on start/windows button > device manager > Security Devices and find TPM Trusted Platform Module or w.e name is and if it shows up there does it say 2.0?

The only thing it says under Security Devices is: AMD NULL Driver for Microsoft Pluton Security Processor

Read some of these threads; in one of them, somebody appears to have found a solution.

TL;DR: Windows 10 does not have a driver for the TPM, and so Windows 11 setup thinks you do not have one.

as long it says enabled in bios it should show up and work fine in windows 11. So it seems windows it failing to detect the device correctly i guess.

It doesn’t matter if it is set to Enabled. If the operating system you are running doesn’t have a driver for it, it is not going to be able to find it.

The thing is they got windows 10 atm it seems and normally TPM doesn’t not need drivers to work. It uses was built in on windows. Unless it’s part of chipset drivers and if user hasn’t installed the driver pack for windows 10 then that is it, if they have then that isn’t it.

Grief, you come up with some corkers at times.
Everything needs drivers, yes most of them are built in, but the TPM driver is not built in to Win10. Win10 does not have support for TPM2, which is why the Win11 upgrade cannot find it.

So, just to clarify, the TLDR of this whole situation is that I won’t be able to upgrade to W11? Thanks for all the help, everyone!

Hi. I am no Windows expert, but I think that you might have more luck talking to Microsoft support to help you out here. It appears to be an upgrade problem between Windows 10 and Windows 11, so surely Microsoft would be able to help as it is their operating system.

I would encourage you to read one or more of the threads I linked in a previous reply. One of them seems to contain the answer (or at least, a workaround.)

Here is the more straightforward approach:

Backup whatever is valuable on the laptop.
Follow the new Framework instructions for installing Windows 11 on the Framework Laptop 16

In there it instructs to create, modify, and then BOOT directly from the USB. This is a definite way for it to recognize that all the hardware is there for Windows 11. Suggest wiping the drive and starting with a clean install.

Windows 10 was never intended to be installed or supported by the Framework Laptop 16. Hence why this is a figure it out scenario.
