Laptop suddenly can't boot

Which Linux distro are you using?
Pop!_OS (most recent version but I can’t boot the laptop to get the specific number)

Which release version?
(if rolling release without a release version, skip this question)

(If rolling release, last date updated?)

Which kernel are you using?
No idea and I can’t really easily check since the laptop doesn’t really boot.

Which BIOS version are you using?
Same as above.

Which Framework Laptop 13 model are you using? 13th Gen Intel® Core™

Hello! A about a week or so ago, my Framework stopped booting, sometimes.
I’m not really sure what circumstances it does/doesn’t, but it usually only works after I go through the little battery reset sequence (I’m very sorry I don’t know what it’s called).

I’ve had issues with it not booting at all in the past, so I’ve had to reset the main board and recharge the little watch battery about 6-10 times.

But this is different now. I’m attaching videos (okay, I now see I can’t attach videos, but I have videos), but it gets stuck in a boot loop and nothing happens. There’s a little light sequence that plays (some green, then red and a bit of blue). And eventually just flashing red and the fan spins and it never boots.

The only way I get it out of the loop is by unplugging the battery.

I’ve gotten it to revive before, but I really don’t want to keep fighting with this again and again.

For what it’s worth, I don’t have any important documents on the computer (all on the cloud), so if the solution is to just reset literally everything and update, I’m fine with that. But idk how to do it :smiling_face_with_tear:

Apologies that this post is a bit space with useful info, but I’m not really sure what’s going on.

My advice to you is to blow away your current install and use a Linux distro that is officially supported. Especially since you seem relatively new to Linux. These official distros are certified to work properly. As you like Pop I can recommend Ubuntu. If you have some time and can wait, Mint is getting official support soon as well.

Highly recommend using officially supported distros.

Someone else might be able to walk you through triaging your current install though. Time will tell.

As you describe that it works without the battery connected, my guess is that you need a new battery.

I’ve been using Pop!_OS for close to 9 years now, so I wouldn’t really consider myself new. I didn’t mean to give that impression.

But I am interested in using a fully supported Distro. Mint is something I’ve used before and when it gets supported, I think I’ll switch it.

The only thing I don’t know how to do is to do a full BIOS update (or whatever I need to do) to get Mint to be supported, when it eventually does. Are there special steps that I need to take or would doing a normal install of Mint and wiping the drive be enough to get everything 100% up to date and supported.

In the mean time, I think I figured out that if I never close the lid and just force the laptop to shutdown, it’ll boot again the next day…
