Surely I can’t be the only one that thinks mechanical trackpads are superior? ![]()
Welcome to the community!
For me reading your post here, ‘superior’ is not a convincing reason … but I’d want you to have to option to build what you like. I would like to think that Framework’s ethos of “giving you the tools to do it how you need it done” mean I’m up for you having options even if I don’t like the mechanical trackpad in my FW 13 and would prefer a haptic-type trackpad like Apple’s Magic ones (thanks for reminding me that’s another point toward migrating to the Pro screen+battery+trackpad). I figure that you could use the non-Pro lower case+input cover+battery to keep the mechanical trackpad without Framework org having to spin up a second SKU of the Pro parts with your trackpad.
Now you’ve got me thinking, I’m interested in knowing the ‘end of manufacturing life’ dates (I don’t recall seeing them in the shop) for non-pro parts so I can plan an upgrade or know I can rebuild my FW 13 before the upgrade.
Have you tried an apple haptic trackpad though? They are regarded as the best. Some of the ones found elsewhere can be poorly implemented. Framework talks about this in one of their videos, that they had to spend a lot of time at the end getting it really good, and many others stop short.
I imagine good mechanical trackpads are available somewhere, but those I’ve tried have been terrible, quite frankly. Too many use a “diving board” type, which just sucks in my opinion. And feels like the manufacturer just did not care in the slightest. Like, I understand that there are challenges, but this is the best you could do?!
I’ve tried the Apple ones yes! I don’t like them. I have an ASUS and it’s quite frankly the best trackpad I’ve ever used-- smooth, tactile (not too easy or difficult to press down) ![]()
Hi Kenny! Thank you so much for the warm welcome. I’m so excited to be here.
Haha of course it’s not a reason, it’s an opinion! Some people like haptic better, some like mechanical better, and “superior” here is a qualifier for experience, which is by itself often quite subjective. ![]()
But yes. At the end of the day, my question really is about the degree to which Framework could allow for customisation.
With regards to your suggestion, I’ve thought about that, but the Bottom Cover of the 13 Pro is not compatible with the input cover of the 13, and the bottom cover of the Pro and its battery are compatible only between themselves. ![]()
To your last point, I totally agree. I was thinking about it too, and I’ve also sent an email asking them if it’s possible to even create some Pro-non Pro hybrid right off the bat? Obviously we can upgrade and sell off parts but that’s gonna mean unnecessary (?) shipping.
I hardly ever use the mechanical or haptic portions of the touchpads. I tap lightly and never hardly ever actually click the mechanical touchpads. for the mac, I sometimes click with the haptic, sometimes not. I’m not so sure either will affect me as long as this light tapping continues to work on the new FW13 pro touchpad.
You can get SOME of the pro 13 without getting the haptic pad, but you won’t be able to upgrade the bottom cover, which also means you can’t upgrade the battery.
yep. But the battery is precisely what I’m after XD
