No display output - Framework mainboard AI MAX 385

Hi all,

Just got my Desktop Mainboard, put the PC together nicely and it turns on. I plugged the PC via HDMI cable to the TV and nothing. No signal. I tried different cables, different HDMI outputs and nothing. I don’t have a PC monitor to connect with Didplay Port.

Help! What should I do?

So, I have no display output at all. Not HDMI, No display ports. I’m really frustrated and disappointed as I was really looking forward to using my new Framework Mainboard.
I have built a PC with 3rd party case (Cooler master NR200P V2) and SFX power supply, which is brand new: Silverstone SX-650.
During troubleshooting I:

  • Treated the board with extra care - for start.

  • Checked several times all connections from PSU to mainboard were correct.

  • reset the CMOS battery

  • Tried 2 types of TVs

  • Tried 4 different HDMI cables

  • Tried a PC panel with DP input

I was able to get from one screen flickering image: it showed a screen and then went black over and over again. I somehow managed to install Windows 11 that way (real pain).

I raised a ticket tp Framework and if anyone has a clue of what might be wrong - please, let me know. I have no clue what else to do :frowning:

    Thank you.

Here’s a link to the LED codes, they might help you diagnose the issue

My PC SPECS:

  • AI MAX 385 32GB RAM Mainboard
  • Silverstone SX-650 PSU
  • Samsung 990 Pro 4TB NvMe drive
  • Cooler Master NR200P V2 Mini ITX case

Main TV Panel: LG C-3 OLED

Do you have a second cable and/or display you can try? My framework desktop outputs to my main monitor via HDMI no problem, but will not display on my LG TV. In my case it was a cable that worked for nearly 10 years. The newer amazon basics cable I got for my switch 2 dock worked, and I moved it from my monitor to my TV and got a picture.

Thanks for the feedback.

I have tried 4 hdmi cables using 2 different TV panels in my home. One is the LG and another is Sony. Moreover, I tried Asus PC panel with display port. It doesn’t work and I get black scrren / no signal. I want to mention the LG recognizes that there is a source connected, however no signal is displayed. Sigh.

On the Sony LCD panel I get image and then black screen which goes on and off every few seconds.

Hi,

As others have mentioned, the quality of cable might be the cause. Generally keep the cable short as well.

I have not been able to test it, but I suspect the DP/HDMI pre-emphasis and swing negotiation might not work right on some APUs and the various DP/HDMI connectors meaning their adaption to different cable lengths and qualities might not be great.

I had to fix a bug in the amdgpu driver software a while ago, when pre-emphasis/swing was broken on an old vega card.

Thanks for brining it up, but all my HDMI cables are high-quality (2.1) and short. I tried HDMI cables supplied with: PS5, Xbox Series X, PS5 Slim and other I bought online. All give the same results.
To be honest, as an end user I don’t think we should struggle with that. I never expected a smooth “out of the box” experience like setting up a gaming console, but this is simply not working as there is no display signal (or a very bad one on one of my TV panels).

Moreover, I also mentioned earlier that I have tried both outputs of the Display Port outputs from the Mainboard using a high-quality DP cable. That didn’t work either. I would love to hear more suggestions from the community, but I fear it is a case for the Framework support team.
It is very challenging troubleshooting when there is no screen output. The best you can do is make sure all is put together nicely and connected tight.

BTW, I also reset the CMOS battery following the guides of ifixit. and.. NADA.

Are you sure the 8 pins power is well plugged. It look weird.

Yes, firmly attached to PSU and Board.

I looked at the video.

I don’t have a MAX 385, but I would have expected the fan to at least try to spin when the PC is switched on. There is no fan spinning in that video.

I would try removing the NVME SSD, Wifi card, and any other cables you have connected, except for the Power. Make sure the APU fan is connected and the right way round.

Press the power button on the mainboard and see if anything happens. I would expect the fan to spin for a bit at startup, as it would on most mainboards out there.

Try also removing the mainboard from the case. There might be a short on something, so test it outside the case initially.

Hi,

The video starts after the PC was powered on. So, the fan was spinning for some seconds when the PC was powered on then stopped. Everytime I boot the PC the fan spins for 4-5 seconds.

I don’t have wifi card and removed the SSD. Still, no good.

Does the system work correctly and only the video output fail, or is there a more fundamental problem?

Do you have cables for trying out if you can get a display signal via the USB4 ports? They should be outputting display signals, don’t they?

I think you are right. It probably needs a replacement from FW support. Note: I am just another user like you.
