Remarkable have launched the Paper Pro, their new e-ink tablet, and it is apparently a bit of a doozy. It has a very sophisticated colour display system and runs the same software that made the Remarkable 2 so popular.
Remarkable is much more like Framework than the traditional “big tech” establishment in their attitude to aftermarket hacking. Their tablets have attracted a vibrant scene of side-loaded apps and firmware. I rather hope that one day there will be the option to run Genode Sculpt operating system - which already works on the Pinephone - rather than the present £inux based firmware.
The device is said to be repairable and contain no adhesive other than some sticky strips to keep the battery in place. All told I think it will appeal to many of us who like Framework. Nonetheless there does not seem to be a thread for discussing Remarkable tablets generally so here we are.
I have the remarkable 2 and, whilst impressive, it does not quite seem to suit my own workload. I will not spring for the Paper Pro just yet, but look forward to seeing how people use theirs and the extent to which the Remarkable hacking scene embrace it.
Sounds like the Paper Pro 26 could be a solid upgrade, especially with its color display and repairable design. I’m curious to see how the hacking scene develops around it. I have the Remarkable 2 as well and, while it’s great, it doesn’t quite fit my workflow either. Looking forward to seeing how the new model performs!
My experience with Remarkable was never anything positive. I tried out the Remarkable 2 because of the praise it was getting but price for price to its competitors it was more expensive for having weaker specs, it was incredibly locked down, it couldn’t write lines without making them jagged, and this was before they locked away parts of the limited functions it did offer behind a subscription paywall. Then when I went to return it they are the only company I ever met who included the wrong paperwork so that it couldn’t clear customs to leave the USA.
That being said it is nice to see a larger player in the eink space using Gallery 3 which will hopefully push the other larger names in the game into giving it a try over Kaleido 3.
