My framework arrived last night. So far I’m loving this laptop. My only gripe at the moment is that the trackpad takes too much force to actuate and it hurts my fingers. Perhaps a future haptic trackpad upgrade could solve this
For those of you who get yours, watch out to make sure the display cables are routed properly, mine was routed incorrectly and the bezel wouldn’t go on
I don’t like tap to click, it’s got far too many false positives. I also end up accidentally dragging stuff all over my screen when it decides I’ve double tapped before moving my finger.
Before this I had a Thinkpad X1 Extreme Gen 2 and the trackpad was diving board but it either required less force to actuate or the bottom out wasn’t as harsh
I’ve also used a Macbook and their trackpads are great in terms of actuation force, and since its all haptics, I believe actuation force is adjustable in software, however I could be wrong about this
I got my shipping email early this morning (evening Taiwan time). Fedex currently says delivery will be on Tuesday before 12:00pm. Ironic that I am flying out that morning; I suppose I can hope for an early delivery?
Also curious that the latest timestamp from Fedex’s travel history for the package is the same as FlightAware’s departure time for FX14 from TPE to ANC, continuing to MEM, and arriving about 1:00am Saturday morning CDT. Perhaps just me, but I find these logistics details interesting to track.
So far, my only concern is that the antenna and webcam cables seem to be VERY snug up against the right hinge and nearby hardware. It seems like there ought to be more space for them?
I’d have to take apart my prior laptops to see how others did that, but it would seem better if the antenna cable didn’t have to traverse the hinge at all? That would leave just the display and webcam cables, one per hinge. Thoughts anyone?
As long as they are routed properly, it should be fine. If they aren’t you can easily see it from the bezel not sitting flush, “creaking” coming from the hinge when you move the display/the hinges.
Received mine yesterday. 7840U with British English keyboard ordered on 13th August.
Charged Monday 9th Sept, shipped Friday 13th Sept, delivered in England Monday 16th Sept in the morning, pretty good service from Fedex!
Just installed RAM (64GB of Kingston Fury Impact 5600MT CL40 - KF556S40IBK2-64) and SSD (WD Black SN850X 4TB) both purchased separately as they were about half the price that way. Had a little bit of an issue with Input Cover installation, had to disconnect and reroute the Webcam cable over the Wifi Antenna cables to get it be all flush, and took a second attempt to get the bezel seated nicely over that right hinge as well.
Installing Window 11 right now using USB ethernet dongle to complete the networked steps, will likely add a dual boot of some form of Linux as well (toying between Bazzite, Bluefin, Fedora or Ubuntu).
So far quite happy! Immediate impression was it feels smaller than I was expecting (was toying with the FW16 for a while), but my reference point is my work laptop that is a Lenovo P14.
I received mine on Monday, Sept. 16th
AMD 7840, 32GB RAM, 1TB SSD, Intel AX210 Wifi
RAM/SSD/Wifi purchased separately
I’m pretty happy so far. The only hardware issue I ran into was putting in the new Wifi card, the cables are darn snug, annoying to line up properly and can easily get pinched between the new card and part of the chassis.
That said, this laptop runs cool and quiet! I’m getting temperatures of about 45c for both CPU and graphics during idle (listening to music and browsing the web) in Ubuntu 24.04.1.
I also purchased a new 1TB Framework expansion card and although it does get warm, it’s not overly hot.
As for software issues, it seems a bunch of Ubuntu apps don’t resize correctly when going from a scaled monitor (Onboard Framework monitor @ 200%) to another monitor using 100% scaling and vise-versa. I have not tested all apps, but it for sure happens in Chrome, TeamViewer and Signal. The apps seem to keep whatever scaling is set on the primary monitor it initially opens on. So instead I just set the resolution to 1280x800. I lose a bit of screen at the top and bottom, but it’s better than having super big or super small apps going between monitors.
Something that would be nice to see in a update, would be the ability to have the keyboard light auto turn off when not used for some amount of time (set in the BIOS using seconds, with 0 being never turn off).
I’m happy with my purchase! I look forward to using it as my primary system and getting to know it over the next months/years.
So given the delays with Batch 3, is it reasonable to expect that none of Batch 4 (promised September) will ship until October? Are the batch shipping estimates being updated to reflect the delays?
I’m Batch 4 (I think near the front) but with a preorder date of September 2, I’m almost 2 weeks behind Ampera, so unless a ton of inventory ships in the next few days, I find it hard to believe my 7840U Batch 4 can ship before mid-October.
