It won't turn on again

I’ve tried to get my laptop to turn on and even got a replacement motherboard from framework(which I promptly put in). I intentionally went blank because I wanted linux but it wont show anything on the screen. I’ve got photos and videos anything helps, im tired. Oh, is the blue tape a problem btw. Ive tried etchdriod to write on my usb stick and even had a usb c with 20 linux variants that I can only connect through a usb hub.

Im trying to import a video but it says I dont have permission or something

Take that nasty tape off and put the input cover back on, then turn it on. Sheesh what are you doing?

I’m sorry but I broke 3/5 of the motherboard screws and I didnt want my laptop to be like flimsy topsy turvy so used electical tape as a substitute. I did a quick search and checked a couple of forums and posts that said it was okay but im unsure.

Is that even electrical tape? It looks like painters tape… Use Kapton tape, or better yet buy a set of replacement screws for $5 lol

So, what exactly is the issue? Will it not turn on at all, or will it just not show anything on the display? Do you have an external display you can try, assuming it does seem to turn on?

It does look like you have the ribbon cable for the input deck connected. It looks in rough shape, maybe it’s just not actually making the connection when you press the power button on the input panel. I’d try disconnecting it, making sure you have your charger plugged in, manually holding down the chassis intrusion switch and press the power button on the mainboard itself to see if you get anything.

Whats the ribon cable, is it the thing that connects the touchpad with the mobo or one of the plugs for the display, audio or speakers? Is the input deck the the keyboard and is the chassis switch the sw3? I’ve been with the framework support for at least two weeks and they sent over a replacement motherboard and I did exactly as the link but it still doesnt work… I really want this to work. They havent replied to emails in a day or so but I think they’re reviewing thing so I shall wait  patience is a virtue.

I wish framework could just let you post videos but here: https://youtube.com/shorts/NLLKFRxlSTg?feature=share https://youtu.be/YJtwJlb-MgI
I feel like I wanna be gentle but my hands shake too much and I dim the preformance somehow.

Is this a new computer that has never booted up, or was this computer working before and failed?

It’s really hard to tell from the video, but it looks like the input cover ribbon cable may be twisted? It is designed to lay a specific way, and if it is twisted, it will prevent the input cover from laying flat. That’s just a thought as to why the input cover may not be going down on the right side. I know if the antenna cables for the Wi-Fi card aren’t routed correctly, that can prevent it from laying flat as well.

Its the damm ribbon cable, Its the culprit. I look at it closely and since it was dark and I already had suspicions but heres the photos. Can the riboon actually effect the motherboard because I’ll tape it down if I have to. The laptop is recent I got on april 13th, I didnt contact framework support for a week or so. Once I contacted them, they guided me thorough and said something was wrong with the motherboard or ram, I think it was the mobo since the bios loads off that. They sent me another to replace the motherboard but I ripped the audio card while trying to put it in the new motherboard. Then I spent a couple days with framework. I’m a good novice at disassembly at this point. I followed step by step for the motherboard replacement and asked questions before about what to do because I was cautious. It’s been about two months since I order this thing but I can deal with this for about 4 more months before I sell it refurbished for an older prebuilt model.

Look at the middle and reflection on the plastic, im sorry its hard to see.

You’ve got the ribbon cable bent and pinched where it shouldn’t. You shouldn’t have to tape it. Am I noticing a tear in it as well?

Take a look at the video in step 2 of the guide, you’ll see that that the cable goes from the connector on the motherboard and lays flat on the battery and then u-turns back up to where it connects on the input cover so you’re able to open it easily without damaging it.

Through good clipping and folding of tape, ive got this result, I can probably improve in the future.

It has a small gap about a couple centimeters but for now im satisfied

Was this a brand new machine or one that you picked up used? It’s unfortunate that you are running into so many issues. At the same time, and please understand that there is no intention to be unkind, perhaps a pre-built would be a better fit for you?

Its a brand new; it still has the warranty. I dont hate the brand in fact I specifically bought once I knew they were upgradable but it didnt work straight after I put it together. I know Im not the best tech guy but ive watched a couple videos of youtubers assembing it and watched the guide. I’m willing to put the effort into this machine to learn how to repair it but in exchange I want my laptop’s repairability that if you put it right and don’t abuse a lot, it’ll work as the manufacturer(whom still produces newer/older parts and makes all parts avaliable for sale) could make it work. Im just a bit tweaked on the fact it didn’t work twice in a row(its suppose to have something show up on the display which shows nothing and it does turn on and get hot but Nothing)

Understood. Try the ram one stick at a time in each slot: stick A in slot 0, stick A in slot 1, stick B in slot 0, stick B in slot 1. It’s possible that the RAM has an issue and is preventing you from getting to the bios screen. Best of luck.

The right ram didnt do anything at all, ill get to the left ram next time

I watched both videos on YouTube. One thing I noticed is that the connector on the audio board is broken. You don’t need it to boot the laptop up, i would just unplug the cable from the audio board and the motherboard and deal with that later. (Audio Board Replacement Guide - Framework Guides)

I would also unplug the battery, double check that the pins on the motherboard aren’t bent and replug it.

I would say unplug all the expansion cards except for one of the usb c, and plug the charger into that one. Don’t worry about getting a picture out on a TV or booting from a usb yet. You gotta get the Framework logo on your display.

You’ll want to check the connection for the display. Step 7 here

Also, don’t worry about the input cover. You can power it on without the input cover.
To do that, hold down the little leaver switch near the top edge of the board, in the middle, labeled SW3 and press the power button on the top right edge of the board labeled SW1

Am I suppose to charge the battery a little bit more or can I do all theses things as soon as I start charging like this: https://youtu.be/2pccuISQ7-8
