New framework doesn't work

default boot device missing or boot failed .

insert recovery media and hit any key.

then select boot manager to choose a new boot device or to boot recovery media

so nothing happens when I put in the flash drive and nothing happens if I push a key or use the trackpad

OS? Secure Boot on or off?

I don’t know

You have to install an operating system to the SSD before you can use it. If you purchased a copy of Windows through your Framework checkout, there’s likely a download link with instructions (I don’t know for sure, because I didn’t buy that with mine).

Has the flashdrive you’re using been setup as a bootable OS install drive?

I’ve downloaded evrything from the instructions ~ the flash drive is formatted exfat

I did it on a mac

theree is a screen on now

mmy drive was showing but now it’s not and when it is there is no way to get to it

all the stuff on the drive is in folders ~ step 1 ~ step 2 ~ etc.

secure boot installed and locked

secure boot status enabled

user customized security ~ no

Follow the guides here:

Such as this:

and if setting up windows, this:

Step 4 Plug in USB Drive and Open Rufus

it doesn’t work ~ I cant access the usb ~ I can’t find it

Presumably if you are using Rufus you are on a Windows machine. You may need to reformat the usb drive if it is not showing up.

More detail rather than less will aid in troubleshooting and you getting your system up and running more quickly.

Its exFAT shouldn’t exFAt show up ?

at one point it said there was a usb device but now it doesn’t

I’ve turned it off and back on

my product key gives me a link to instructions for windows 10

but mine is 11 pro so I used the 11 instructions

is it because I created the drive on a mac and not a widows computer ?

  1. On what machine are you trying to do this? A windows machine, a mac, something else?
  2. If the drive isn’t showing up and there’s nothing that you need on it, try reformatting it. Yes, exFat should show up, but who knows what state the drive currently is in.
  3. It is not showing up where, on the desktop, from a shell, from partition manager on windows or disk utility on mac?

If you don’t need anything on the usb drive I would reformat it on a windows machine, if you have one, then proceed. You likely could get it to a working state without reformatting, but that’s a quick way to get to a starting spot.

I don’t have a windows machine

where can I use one ~ will the library allow all of this kind of work ?

I’m trying to install windowns on a framework 16 amd

my screen looks like the girls screen on this video because she didn’t use a windows computer to create the installation media

this is the only video I’ve seen where the screen looks like mine @ 5:36

You will need to look into how to create a bootable windows installer on a mac, find a windows pc to use to create the installer, or enlist help from someone to do it.

At the risk of being a bit blunt, what is your skill level with doing these things? Have you ever installed Windows before? It’s not terribly complicated, but as you are discovering, it can be a little picky about exactly how it is done.

Only FAT (FAT32) works

no it needs to be flashed with a funky custom microsoft software for it to be bootable
yes we know it’s really awful
you can find it here and apparently it works on mac
it should set everything up for you
be careful to select your USB drive and not your boot drive

I installed ubuntu and I don’t like it because it’s not mac

my keyboard is not backlit and the fingerprint reader isn’t working

there are no instructions on the site to download drivers but I downloaded a bunch of them from the windows install instructions ~ do I use these drivers ?

the keyboard backlight is fn + space

hopefully a linux person will respond with how to get the fingerprint reader to work

It’s actually fn + space

For the fingerprint reader, there should be steps in the framework ubuntu setup guide to get it going.

you’re right
