Just updated my 13" to a Ryzen 7640U. After figuring out I had to wait a really long time for “RAM training”, it booted.
But after running Windows Update, I lost output to the integrated screen. It does output to the screen if I swap back in the old gen 11 i5, so the screen appears to work fine.
After lots of start-up and power-downs to enter safe mode, I reset Windows. It hung on 99% downloaded, I eventually hard powered down after hours of waiting, and when I rebooted, I could see on the integrated screen again.
But after running Windows Update, boom, no screen output on reboot.
I had tried plugging it into an external monitor without any luck, but finally tried hooking up the monitor before reboot (brilliant, right?). Now I have output to the external monitor.
I have nothing on the integrated screen still.
I downloaded amd-software-adrenalin-edition-25.9.1-minimalsetup-250901_web.exe from AMD’s website and installed the drivers. Reboot. Still nothing from internal screen.
It doesn’t seem to like my Thunderbolt dock either (no screen output to the external through there), but that’s a secondary concern at best right now.
Which release of your OS (Operating System / Windows 10, 11)? (if you are having a Linux related issue, please create your thread under the Linux subcategory)
ver gives Microsoft Windows [Version 10.0.26200.6899]
Are you installing the Framework Driver Pack? Also, are you starting from a clean Windows installation? Someone else posted recently that after upgrading their main board Windows was doing some weird stuff. Then they fresh installed Windows and the issue went away. Odd I know.
Something is going on with the video drivers from the looks of it. Congrats on the new mainboard.
If you’re trying to re-use your old Windows installation from an Intel system, you should probably run DDU (Display Driver Uninstaller) to get rid of the old display drivers before installing the new AMD ones.
Okay, tried the bundle. Strange. I think it must’ve rebooted itself eventually after I executed the bundle, because I came back and the laptop monitor was on again. Then I rebooted and… external monitor only. Detect displays… nothing else found.
I hope that works. I guess you could have a weird hardware fault. Good luck.
Added later: You could try unplugging everything from the laptop, except maybe your charger, and then rebooting. Maybe you have something unusual, such as your Thunderbolt dock, that’s really confusing the AMD chipset.
I installed a brand-new, never used SSD, created new Windows installation media on a USB drive, went through the setup, and about the time I’m selecting not to share my location after signing in, BLAM. The monitor flips to higher resolution, then the screen blacks out.
The only things plugged in are a power supply, the Windows installation media USB, and a USB-C to ethernet adapter for network.
I forced power down and now it just says…
Your device ran into a problem and needs to restart. We’ll restart for you.
Stop code: INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE (0x78)
Over and over. That is, it restarts, I see the Framework boot screen, then the screen with the text quoted above over and over and over…
Man, this is not a good experience. I’ve wasted days working on this at this point. Not sure what could’ve screwed things up. Is there a chance I have an unexpected screen or something that would throw off the standard drivers, which I guess Windows was installing in the background?
Okay, I followed the instructions here to jump into boot device selection by holding down F12 as it restarts, reselected the USB Windows Installation Media, chose to erase everything and install Windows 11, and got to a slightly different place in the setup process before the same thing happened. The driver must have installed in the background, the monitor goes to a higher resolution, and then WHAM, it black screens and never comes back.
I followed these instructions to get past the driver install. If I skip driver install during a clean Windows 11 install from installation media, it completes okay.
The very first thing I did once I was in was get drivers from AMD. During the install, it flashes, black screens, and I’m stuck.
Gotta think either I got a bad board or my screen is wacky somehow.
