I have a batch 10 Framework 16 (7840HS) running both Windows 11 (internal SSD) and Linux Mint (250g expansion card). Upon booting, I noticed that Grub failed to present normal boot options, which I traced to the computer not seeing the 250g expansion card. The expansion card which was still plugged in the middle slot on the right. I tested the other expansion cards and none would provide power or data, though the USB-C card could still charge the laptop. The light between the top two expansion cards did not function (which shows charging with a red or white light), and neither did the light around the power button. The fingerprint sensor on the power button still works.
I contacted support, who asked for a lot of documentation regarding BIOS and OS versions. I performed a mainboard reset and a BIOS reset with no change in behavior. Framework eventually determined that I needed to replace the mainboard…conveniently 3 months past the one year warranty.
I’m pursuing an extended warranty claim with my credit card and may yet be made whole, but a mainboard failure 15 months after purchase is bad. I didn’t pay a premium to invest in a repairable laptop only to face paying another 50% a mere 15 months after purchase. On top of that, I seldomly use this thing. There have been no drops, spills or tinkering that could’ve precipitated this. It just failed.
I’m posting this for the record and to help others who may experience the same issue or suss out some commonalities. There have been a few similar posts and issues, so at least I’m not alone…but it’s more evidence that there’s something wrong.
