Yeah, Lenovo is pretty much the only company that has decent Linux support. Usually.
This is indeed one of the excellent competitors that framework should be aware of. Amazing laptop with strong performance and brilliant screen size for overall laptop size. Basically, you are getting a 17 inch screen in the same size package as the Framework 16. Other strong condenders would probably be Razer 16 or any of the older Razer 15s, as well as potentially the X1 extreme from lenovo, and maybe some xmg laptops. Competition is strong indeed, and shipping of framework 16 seems to take as long as it possible can apparentlyā¦ ;). I hope they send it before Christmas.
Clearly you havenāt seen that they use an older and soldered Wi-Fi card, have Dellās poor XPS quality control, and poor thermals.
XPS has 60hz refresh rate on the screen
and you re stuck with that refresh rate :((
Canāt argue there. I had a 15" (3050ti) a while back and the fans used to ramp up like nobodyās business. I found that the graphics would throttle as well, most likely as a resultā¦
I mean, if weāre going to be comparing modularity and upgradability, there was never any contest to begin with. Even beyond XPS, no modern Dell laptop is designed to have its motherboard upgraded, nor is there proper support for graphics upgrades (they simply have no flexibility in their cooling solutions). In this niche, Framework is entirely unmatched. (Perhaps Iām stating the obvious here)
I do think itās valid to compare out-of-box performance, though.
Well, as a Batch 12 orderer, Iām gald to see some else is in an early natch, to get rid of the bugs for the rest of us ā¦
Seriously iām hoping that the FW13 AMD will iron out any BIOS bugs and what have you. Iām guessing that from the BIOS viewpoint there should be hardly any difference. Then hopefully once they start shipping things will ramp up even faster than the FW13 AMD has, after all, we are now almost half way through Q4
Not everything needs high refresh. Honestly I wish the framework display had variable refresh down to 1hz. When Iām writing, I donāt need it spending all that battery updating a display to the same colors.
I do have a Dell Latitude 7400 that is pretty well supported, alas only Intel CPU.
But it is not the same - work laptop, and I am one of the few in the company running Linux on it. But, I am also the only one never having been offline because of system/bios updates!
To be honest, having lived the Linux experience since kernel 0.11p7 back in end 1992 or so, I do not really are about the bugs (because there will be). The thing is about support and communication as Framework does. They answer fast, and as history has shown, fix bugs!
That, for me, is the commitment from a company I am willing to pay for the support they provide. And here, it is the price of the unit.
The only other company I know doing that is OSMC https://discourse.osmc.tv/ .
If you guys donāt know them, they build a media-player based on Linux running Kodi and provide support (updates etc.) for years. Support is amazing too etc.
Oh, and I forgot the PiKVM guys. Amazing hardware - Check them out : https://pikvm.org/
All, open source, it works! and if there are bugs, they help you out.
Agree on all terms, but the LOOK great, have solid performance for the form factor, and have an excellent screen-to-body ratio ;). But I agree, we can keep arguing for long. But I think many would agree XPS line is pretty good when it comes to windows laptops.
I would say so, except each one has problems; the 17 has a poor and soldered wi-fi card; same with the 15, but that one also has a worse port selection than a MacBook Pro. The XPS 13 Plus is frustrating to use and is below average in my opinion in terms of ports, touchpad, battery life, and usability with the not touch bar. As for the XPS 13 (9315), just donāt buy it; itās basically a worse MacBook Air with nothing thatās good about it.
I know what you mean, done my fair share of bug fixing, and seen some strange bugs others have introduced.
When my inbox said it had an email with āshipping dates FW16ā my heart dtarted to race - what deliveries starting ??? - despite mine being at the end of Q1.
Youāll have to wait for someone at Framework to respond or contact support, which I doubt theyāll know or tell.
I am Batch 10 of Framework Laptop 16. Will I receive my latop framework before 2024?
Iām not sure exactly where batch 10 sits, but if you view the details of your order on the Framework website there will be a shipping quarter listed. I imagine the best case scenario would be early next yearā¦
This is exactly what has been happening to me all week. But everytime I look i get slightly dissapointed that it is just people discussing linux and other laptops in this topic
My batch is the 7th and there was a translation error to French, turning it from Q4 2023 to Q1 2024. So I suppose it may be the first batch of 2024, and I expect to receive it in January.
No doubt batch10 will be 2024.
If you order right now, you get Batch 14 āShips Q2ā.
Framework has said they are working with their manufacturing partners to ramp up production to better meet demand.
No chance. It was stated at Q1 2024 when you ordered it.
